Cancer Update!
Posted by: "rescue@rochester.rr.com" rescue@rochester.rr.com horserescue1
Mon Mar 26, 2012 1:26 pm (PDT)
Sorry I've taken so long to update but there hasn't ben much to report. Today there is. I had my CAT scan last Thursday but didn't get the results until this morning. I am not in remission but the cancer has not grown at all so everything is stable right now. Next moth they want me to go in for brain radiation just in case afew cancer cells might have lodged there. They said this is just preventative and better safe than sorry. Meanwhile I am still doing the tumeric and fish oil along with apple juice, baking soda and honey to make the body alkaline to fight the cancer. I have changed my diet drasticaly to exclude any red meat so lots of fresh vegetables and juices. I am eating some fish and chicken but not much. I have been going outside more now that the weather is warmer. I cut half the lawn but then suffered a flat tire on the lawn mower. Chris and I are both
optimistic but I will still be going in for more scan from time to time.
Thank all of you for all of your support and prayers during this difficult time for us. I am anxiously awaiting for my hair and beard to grow back. I have one more treatment tomorrow and Wednesday and am done for the time being.

Mini Mare Update!
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Mon Apr 2, 2012 4:44 pm (PDT)
The little mini mare arrived today while the podiatrists were here. Watching her try to back off the trailer was horrible. She got her left foot stuck between the floor and the ramp in that little drop down space you can see in the below picture just behind her back left foot. When her left foot got stuck, her right one went straight out to the side and two of us caught and supported her and helped her to move forward back into the trailer. It scared the bejimminies out of me! I asked that the divider be removed so she could turn around and walk out. That worked much better.
She seemed to study the ramp for a few seconds and then she moved forward and managed to make it down ok.
We got a much better look at her once at the barn. It was easy to see that she is a sweetheart. It was also easy to see that her backend has issues. We're not sure what happened to her, or when it happened, but we were told that she sustained an injury when foaling some years ago. Her left back leg has little muscle, if any, and it is fused straight. She walks on it like a peg leg and it does appear shorter than the right leg. Her back toes were curled up and you can see in the picture below what she was having to walk on. It looked pretty uncomfortable.
We knew it was going to take some time and effort to get her back feet in such a way that it would help her to move around and that she'd have difficulty putting weight on either of her back legs for even a short amount of time for her trim. You can't bend her back left leg at all - its fused in the straight position.
Sometimes, especially when going up an incline, her back end would get locked and it would take her a few seconds to get moving again. I have to give her a lot of credit - she is a very brave girl and she has learned to manage getting around.
We wanted to give her some relief today - even if just a little - so we put the sling to work.
We didn't want her in the sling any longer than necessary - Laura and Cindy each took a back foot and did some fantastic teamwork to get it done. Everyone did a great job!
Then the front feet were done. All of her feet have infection in them and we'll be treating them as best as we can.
While her left leg/foot still turns out - her hooficure has helped her to manage to get around better. It will take some time for her body to adjust and getting her as comfortable as possible make time quite a bit of time. But she has a lot of light in her eyes and I know she's very grateful for what was done today.
After she was out of the sling she was ready to find the grass! It took a little while for her to get used to the changes in her feet from her hooficure but once she realized she could move those back feet without dragging them nearly as much she seemed very pleased - which made all of us happy! Although, the left one still appears shorter and just sort of hangs in the air when she stands for a period of time - depending on how she is standing. She has little muscle in her backend. She may have locking stifles, some other old injury, or both - we just don't know.
In this picture you can see that her back left leg still hangs in the air. If you look closely you can see it is about 2" off the ground. It doesn't do this all of the time - just depends on how she is standing. This afternoon I've seen her actually stand on her peg leg and rest her right quite a bit.
Thank all of you for caring about this little girl - her name is Patty. She is said to be about 16 years young. Dr. Bess will be here tomorrow so we'll see how her teeth are and Dr. Ryan will be by in the next couple of days to examine her and likely do x-rays. I'm not sure that whatever is wrong with her back leg can be fixed but we will figure it all out and make her as comfortable as possible.
And to those that are donating to help make us helping her possible – thank you! I'll try to post two videos of her on the website later tonight. One was taken before the hooficure and one was taken after. Patty is going to need monthly sponsors for awhile. If you'd like to help with her care expenses please contact us - no amount is too small!

Theresa

URGENT: Young Paint Down in BHFER Neighborhood!
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Mon Apr 2, 2012 7:13 pm (PDT)
Theresa got a call tonight from someone in the area we have never met, stating an unknown horse wandered onto his unfenced property. When the owners checked her, she was too weak to get up.
The horse is young, a one on the Henneke Scale, and a rack of bones.
Theresa is on-site now and has assessed the horse to the best of her ability.
The vet is administering fluids (with dextrose, electrolytes, etc.) and trying to stabilize her. We will try to get her on our horse trailer to BHFER for further care.
At this time we need prayers and pledges and/or donations for tonight's emergency vet call and whatever tomorrow may bring.

Twilight Crossed Rainbow Bridge
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Mon Apr 2, 2012 10:05 pm (PDT)
The little filly that I named Twilight crossed Rainbow Bridge tonight – she was just too far gone. In her final hours she knew she was loved. She knew kind and caring hands. I'm so sorry we couldn't help her - she was just a baby - likely just over a year old.
She had IV fluids and the vet did all he could. She gave it her best and we prayed hard - but God called her home. She was so thin with many sores on her. She broke my heart. She will be buried on Frosty's Knoll tomorrow.
I'm sorry but I have nothing else to say tonight. I'm just tired, very tired and very sad. Incredibly sad. It just doesn't seem fair. She was so young and innocent. She didn't deserve so much suffering.
Run with the angels dear Twilight - you fly with perfect wings now. While I knew you for only a short time - I love you and always will.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Narissa's x-rays - and Gentleman
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:01 pm (PDT)
I've been putting this update off since this afternoon. I'm sorry to have to share bad news. Narissa's right front has rotated and she is a sinker. We don't know how long she's been this way. She's 25+ years old and
certainly has a love for life - she's a survivor, IMO. We will try to keep her comfortable and when we can't we will love her enough to help her cross. But until then she will get lots of TLC. She has the run of the barn and
seems to be content. Although, she spends quite a bit of her time in her stall. She got her mane braided today - everyone showers her with attention. She knows she is loved.
Some more upsetting news Gentleman has had high ring bone for awhile. We kept him comfortable throughout the cold season and thought we'd see an improvement with the warmer weather but we haven't. He's been getting supplements that were helping but lately he seemed to be getting worse. I had x-rays done today and the condition has worsened. He has been getting bute after morning feed these past few days and UGuard. We will be starting him on a different medication in hopes that it will help. He does not tolerate bute well. If the medication doesn't help we can have the joint injected but that may be a bit challenging and poses risks in itself. You can bet that we will do all we can to keep him comfortable. GMan has lots of light in his eyes. We love him, very much. I can't imagine Beauty's Haven without him here. He's approaching 30 years young but we pray for many more years with him.
Please pray for Gentleman and Narissa. I will try to post pictures tomorrow. I'm just too beat tonight. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Theresa

My birthday today...
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:41 pm (PDT)
I had a really nice birthday today! I did worked all day but the weather was perfect and I worked outside with the horses - not at my computer so I loved it! I wanted to ride for a few minutes but the day was over before I
knew it. Our kids came home late this evening for dinner and cake. I went on Facebook tonight and couldn't believe all of the "Happy Birthday" posts! And the emails and e-cards! Thank all of you - they mean a lot to me – a whole lot! I don't get on the computer much to "converse" with anyone anymore but I know everyone knows I'm very busy with the horses and that I'm always only a phone call away. Volunteers are going to take me out to lunch or dinner one day next week. And - it was on the front page of our local newspaper today (Williston Pioneer Sun News) that I have been nominated "Pioneer of the Year!" The winner will be chosen at the end of the year but this nomination was a total surprise - what an honor!
Here are a couple of pictures from yesterday and today.
Dr. Ryan says Narissa is close to 30 years young. She enjoys being able to come and go in and out of her stall. She stands in the breeze of the aisle way a lot.
Ghost and a little braid in his forelock - he got a much needed bath this week. Ghost is a sweetheart and is looking for a forever home. He is a 15 yr young Paso Fino gelding. Katie, our daughter, had a blast riding him.
Nikole is doing well - she's waiting for her turn to get body clipped. She really is a sweet mare. She is looking for a forever home. She has Cushings but it is managed with a compounded version of Pergolide. We've
not had any issues with her - just a wooly coat.
Gentleman is next in line for body clipping. If anyone in this area can do this please call me!
Narissa napping..
I am totally beat and am going to get to bed a bit early. I will be up early to go to the Paso farm for the day. We need to find homes for the remaining mares.
Have a blessed weekend everyone and thank you for your continued friendship and support!

Theresa

Narissa Update 03/17/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:02 pm (PDT)
Narissa had a good day today - Pam body clipped her and then she got another bath. She's being terribly spoiled and everyone loves her!
Her feet were trimmed yesterday. She seems to be walking better but is ouchy. We put booties on her back feet - they were pretty infected. Here are pics of before and after of her front feet.
Her body needs time to adjust to changes in her feet, environment, feed, etc. We take is slow with new arrivals. She's not drinking as much as I'd like but she is getting electrolytes. She seemed very happy today in her stall munching on her hay and when she'd get walked outside.
Her eyes were brighter this evening - she seems very much at home here already. It's raining so she is in the barn tucked in for the night. What a doll she is! She really appreciates every bit of affection and everyone loves giving it to her!
If everyone would keep her in prayers we'd greatly appreciate it. For those helping with her needs - thank you so much! We have enough for her initial vetting, farrier, and possibly her dental needs. She will need some supplements. If anyone would like to help please remember that no amount is too small and any amount is appreciated. We'll let her settle in for a couple of days and then have her examined and some blood work done on her. Dr. Bess will be out at the end of the month to do her teeth. Hopefully her feet will get better, she'll start putting on weight in a healthy way, and she'll feel more comfortable each the day. It is a blessing to have her here with us.
I have more good news (with pictures) to share with everyone but really need to call it a day. It was my first full day outside since coming home sick on Wednesday. I'm exhausted and my back is seriously wanting a hot shower. Have a wonderful night everyone - thanks again and God bless!

Theresa

BHFER Update 03/16/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:25 pm (PDT)
Hi everyone - I am sorry I'm overdue for an update but I came home Wednesday and went to bed with a horrible stomach/flu bug Not sure I'm over it 100% yet but I'm trying - I have too much to do to stay sick.
We have a new rescue that was picked up yesterday - a very thin mare that may have Cushings. Her feet looked horrible - she's likely foundered. She's sore all over which is likely due, in part, to the way she had to walk but she got a hooficure today and a bath. You can easily put a finger between each and every rib. She will be body clipped tomorrow.
Her hip bones and spine are very prominent.
She looks depressed - just look at her eyes. We hope to change that. We need sponsors - please consider donating to help with her vetting, dental, farrier, and care expenses. We usually ask for sponsors before bringing in a new rescue but in this case there was no time.
Kathy and Marty visited last week (from Michigan) and it was wonderful to meet them in person and to spend time with them! They met all of the horses here - Magic enjoyed the extra attention - all of the horses did! Magic wasn't too sure of what an IPad is but he sure seemed inquisitive.
On the 2nd day of their visit Kathy went to the Paso farm to work with me while Marty helped Bob fix fences at the farm. After a long day of working we decided to go to the local tavern for dinner and to relax and chat - Beanie Barbaro joined us! It's very rare that Bob and I both get off the farm together - it was great! Thanks so much Kathy and Marty - we look forward to your next visit!
Lacey is still very pregnant. She is huge!
Sayan is doing great at his new home. His new mare fell in love with him and he with her - it was meant to be! And his human adoptive mom loves him too! He's got green grass, shade trees, and his own girlfriend - he's got it made! This is what we pray for all of them for - and it takes as long as it takes to find just the right home.
Wednesday morning the oldest mare that was at the Paso farm went to her new home - she's settled in well and seems very content. She's with another mare that had been adopted from there so she has a familiar friend so that is a blessing. It was so good to get her into the barn and to cut that number tag/rope off of her! We also brushed her out and sprayed her with MicroTek and flyspray. Then she went home! Most all of the mares are shedding out what I call a "rescue" coat and a new, healthy coat is coming in.
Two other Paso mares left Wednesday - together. I really like it when two can go together.
We still have applications being processed for Pasos and there are about ten mares left. In addition, there are some waiting for transport. I can't imagine it would happen - but we may have more applications than horses! If that is the case we have many horses at the rescue that need good homes! Our website is not up to date so if you visit the "Available" for adoption page and don't see what you may be looking for please email me. We have QH's, Arabian's, TB's, mini's and others looking for good homes.
Volunteers Melissa and George will have a Beauty's Haven booth set up at the Paso Fino show in Ocala, FL tomorrow and Sunday. The show is located at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion. They will have an informational book of BHFER horses available for adoption. There are still about ten Paso Fino mares left to adopt and many other horses that are currently at the rescue. Please come out and show your support - donations are greatly needed! All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small.
Marie and other volunteers will be having a bake sale at Tractor Supply in Ocala tomorrow - there will be lots of goodies! Come out and show your support - stop by on your way to the Pavilion!
Some have asked about how my Popper dog is doing - she is doing just great! She's even jumping into the horse water buckets again to get cooled off! If anyone ever needs a way to happily confine a doggie please check out Doggie Dorms - our dogs just love them! http://www.furbuddiesblingiton.com/index.html. They are easy to clean, offer good space, they are adorable! They fold up, come in different sizes,
have their own storage case, and I didn't even need instructions on how to use one! LOL! They really are awesome!
Thank you all for your continued support - we wish everyone a blessed and wonderful weekend! If anyone would like to help sponsor the new arrival please email me at bhfer@earthlink.net. Any amount would help - we can only help those in need with support from others. We are an all volunteer organization and 100% of donations go directly to helping the horses.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Putting hope back into the lives of horses one at a time.
I am sorry that this is late getting out but it has taken me a little while to collect my thoughts and be able to write this email.
It is with great sadness that I announce our dear sweet Dollar passed away on Sunday February 19th. He started colicking that morning and after trying everything possible to save him he lost the fight that evening. His family is devestated to say the least. I can't thank Craig & Deb enough for giving Dollar the best home possible. He was so loved and he knew it. He worshipped them as well. You could see it in his eyes everytime Deb was around. He wouldn't take his eyes off of her no matter where she went. It was amazing to see a horse that had suffered so much abuse love so unconditionally.
Dollar was a seizure from another county. He was dropped off out our local cattle auction. One of our volunteers worked there and knew he needed help. He purchased him thinking he was a gelding. When we arrived to check him out we noticed he was a stallion and only had one testicle dropped. We had no room at our facility and that is when Deb & Craig stepped up. They took him sight unseen. They fostered him until we raised the $1082 it cost to have him gelded at the University. After he was gelded he stayed with them another few months until we had an opening at the rescue. He was here a few weeks before they decided to adopt him. WE WERE THRILLED!! It was a perfect match.
After they adopted Dollar bits and peices of his story started to come out. He had lived in a junk yard for some time with little to no care. The neighbors called the deputies on his owner all the time. Finally they ended up seizing him but not before he had suffered some severe trauma. He had scars all over his body. His nose had permenant damage from being tied to a tree for days on end. He belly had the tell tale signs of severe spurring. Even after all this he was a very kind and loving horse. He tried so hard to please and would do anything his family asked him.
All of us at the rescue are so sadden by this loss but we are thankful that he had a WONDERFUL last 3 years of his life. He was in a home with all the love in the world and he thrived. We wish that all our horses could be so lucky.
RIP Dollar. You will never be forgotten.

BH Update 03/06/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Tue Mar 6, 2012 6:37 pm (PST)
An update on what's going on here - a lot! The weather has been nuts. The winds have been horrible but we have no right to complain - many have lost lives and so much in the storms throughout the Midwest. Our prayers are with them. Yesterday was the first day in many that it was nice - warm sun and in the high 70's. But the nights have still been near freezing. We had a terrible wind/rainstorm on Saturday night that caused a lot of erosion. We were without power yesterday morning.
Some bad news regarding Harley. A new pink mass has found in the corner of his right eye. The much larger mass that was removed when he was here was in his left eye. His human mom was right on it and the vet thinks it is pretty much superficial and contained in the 3rd eyelid and it will be removed. Harley is such a sweet and good boy. He's loved very much and we can't thank his adoptive parents enough for their love and care for him. I'll update when I know more. Please keep Harley and his human family in prayers.
Beanie Barbaro his having a great time. He's spent some time with a few of the horses and he took a field trip with me to the Paso farm. I'll have to provide details later but here are some pictures of the last few days - including some with Beanie Barbaro.
Dr. Joan giving vaccinations, drawing coggins, etc. and Fabio, one of our farriers doing some trims.
Our transporter, Pam, holding for the trims.
What a beautiful face - and such kind eyes!
And another beautiful mare.
There are Paso mares still needing homes but currently we have applications on all of the ones in the barn. If any are not approved or someone changes their mind and one becomes available I will update. We still have 8 out in the paddocks that we need to bring in and process in order to be adopted. This has been a very tiring endeavor but worth every minute. To see the ones that have gone to their adoptive homes being loved and cared for is awesome. And working with, and meeting, new people in order to help the horses is invaluable. By networking, we can all help more horses.
Little Lily sharing a secret with Beanie Barbaro - he's the smallest horse on the farm - she's the 2nd smallest horse!
Many of you may remember dear sweet Heart - here he is with his human family that loves him terribly! He's doing great.
We hope everyone is having a great week. We still could use help with hay - credits can be called directly into the hay store, Larson's, at 352-867-8333. Cindy will be here on Friday to do some hooficures – if anyone would like to help with them that would be helpful too!
Thank you all for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Theresa

BH Morning Update 03/02/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Fri Mar 2, 2012 5:14 am (PST)
Good Friday morning everyone from another day of overcast skies here in our little corner of the world!
Another busy day - more visitors but today we have more volunteers coming! There are some people coming to look at horses this coming weekend. Please pray that they find good forever homes with a family of their own. I have to spend a good part of the day in the office - various applications to process, contracts to prepare, health records to update, and the list goes on. Once I get behind it's really hard to get caught up.
Yesterday was extremely busy - I talked so much I don't have a voice left! We had 4 visitors throughout the day and while giving a tour I tend to talk a lot - I like to tell the stories of each horse here. J
Katie got up on Ghost this week and had a blast. He's a Paso Fino and knows how to do the Paso Corto - it's was Katie's first experience with it.
I guess they both had fun - they were all smiles when they were done!
Ruby introduced Beanie Barbaro to visitors yesterday. Ruby loves the attention and everyone loves Ruby!
I need to get to the barn now but will be back at my desk in a bit. I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed day!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Update
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:45 am (PST)
It was a very productive day at the Paso farm on Saturday. We got a couple mares into the barn and got them settled in. I called Dr. Joan Gariboldi out to treat one of the mare's (Maraca) that has been in for a few days that appeared to be trying to colic and she had a slight temperature. Maraca was oiled but as of this morning she still had not passed any manure. Pam transported Maraca here to the rescue yesterday so we can monitor her and have Dr. Joan out again if needed. Pam (http://www.doublebequinetransport.com/) is a wonderful transporter and we recommend her without any reservations!
Dr. Joan also vaccinated some of the horses and pulled coggins and did a health certificate. One of the mares left to go to her new home. Slowly but surely we are making progress. I was supposed to go back yesterday for pictures but it's horrible weather and my bronchitis is worse again. Here are a few pictures from Saturday.
Red got to play in the round pen yesterday and he loved it! And we enjoyed watching him!
One of the available mares - #10. Not sure of her age yet. A coggins needs to be pulled on her. She is an alpha mare.
This is Scarlet. She's a very sweet mare estimated to be 6 years old. Coggins is done.
Maraca is now here for monitoring. She has passed some poop on her way here and seems less stressed. The weather is still horrible.
Two of the studs are being picked up this morning. Hopefully the rains will subside long enough for them to load without any problems. Seeing them go is bittersweet but we are very happy that they will have their own human family. It's hard for us not to get attached to each one of them - and we do. J
Everyone at the rescue is doing well except for Legacy. He had a trim last week and is ouchy in his front foot. He's in a stall for now but seems to be better. Lacey is absolutely huge! How she will go a few more weeks is beyond us! Poor girl looks like she's going to pop! We could really use some help with hay for the horses here at the rescue. Credits can be called into Larson's at 352-867-8333. If you'd like to help by calling in a credit there please specify it is for the BH horses vs the Paso's. Any amount would help and all donations are tax deductible.
Have a blessed day everyone.
Sincerely,
Theresa

BHFER Update 02/28/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:32 pm (PST)
It's staying busy here - as usual. It's still busy at the Paso farm too. A little update on both.
Beenie Barbaro arrived at the rescue today! He made his way first to visit Legacy who has an ouchy front left foot. Dr. Ryan examined Legs today and it's likely an abscess. I remember holding Legacy in my lap after he came to the rescue only a couple of weeks old - his momma had died the day before from untreated eye cancer. We almost lost him a couple of times (his body wasn't making bone marrow) but God answered prayers and this boy thrived. He is simply stunning - and huge! He's about 16 hh now, still growing, and
is ready for a forever home!
Legacy today and Legacy as a baby.
As a baby and today in his stall.
Legacy standing next to HighTower chatting about something 2+ years ago.
Legacy is as tall as HighTower is now! Please spread the word that Legacy needs a good home. He's ready to start his training. HighTower is also looking for a good home.
Nikole is doing very well. Sorry that the pictures are a bit dark – the weather here hasn't been very good. Nikole is available as a pasture pal.
Asiya is looking for a home. She's a nice 20 year old mare that loves attention - very easy keeper.
And Morning Star still needs a home! Gary worked with him a bit on his last visit. Morning Star loves to play ball and he adores attention, ropes, and garden hoses! J
Montana is ready for a new forever home. He's about 17 years old. He neck reins and rides like he may have been a cow horse at some time in his life. He's got an awesome personality and makes us laugh.
It's been a long few days at the Paso farm too - we're trying hard to process horses as fast as we can so that they can get into good homes. Catching and stalling them, coggins, feet, vaccinations - it takes quite a bit of time with horses that are not used to being cared for. And the paperwork can be overwhelming! Some of the horses do ok with handling but many need extra patience and reassurance. We are hand walking the ones
staying in stalls so they get some sunshine and can graze a bit.
We've had some studs leave for their new homes - as of now all studs have homes. I shouldn't say all studs - many have been gelded. Some were gelded today and a couple of more will be gelded tomorrow.
This grand old gal has been vetted and her feet were done today. She'll be going home with another mare friend that lived in her paddock and is now staying across the aisle from her. She isn't sound for riding but she is fortunate to have found her way into a human's heart that wants to offer her a forever home as a pasture pal. What a blessing!
One of the boys trying to wake up after being gelded.
And one preparing to go down with help from Dr. Joan Gariboldi.
Mare #10. Very kind - an alpha mare.
This is how most of the mares greet us now. With a core team of volunteers working with them they have learned to somewhat trust. But when new faces appear they still go the other way - but they are getting better. And the smaller the 2 herds are becoming in the 2 paddocks - the more manageable they are becoming. The mare barn is full but as one or two leave we fill their stalls with others. We're trying to bring friends in together. I can't tell you how hard it is for me when I think about the herd being separated. I wish we could keep them all together but it just isn't possible. We are trying to make the transition from how they have been living to being handled and rehomed as easy as possible for them.
Mare #22. She is also an older mare. She's very beautiful.
A good roll in fresh shavings - it's awesome to see.
Mare #20. She is an older mare - likely at least 20 yrs old with extremely kind eyes. Please consider giving her a home as a pasture pal.
Mare #19.
Mare #7. Very kind. Six years old.
Mare #4. She's 4 yrs old. Nervous around humans but getting better each day - she's now in a stall at the barn. She's put a good amount of weight on but still has a ways to go.
If you have emailed me please forgive me if I haven't responded. This evening is really the first time I've been at the computer for awhile. Thank all of you for caring and for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Tue Feb 21, 2012 4:40 pm (PST)
Sorry, not much of an update today. I'm feeling very much under the weather but did get out long enough to meet the vet at the Paso farm for her to pull coggins on a few of the mares today. I did not go through any paperwork today - none. I've had little of a voice so I have not returned many phone calls. We have received more applications but nothing got processed today - I apologize. I hope and pray I'm back to work tomorrow if only for a few hours. The farrier and the vet will be here at the base rescue in the morning. It will be another busy day - thankfully, volunteers will be here to help.
Very kind and wondrous eyes.
I did get stud #6 out for a short walk. It wasn't a long one - I really am not feeling well and I'm off to bed soon. Hopefully tomorrow I'll wake up feeling much better. At least today I did have somewhat of a voice back.
Thank you all for your patience and for your support. For those that do not know - we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and operate totally off of donations from the public. We have no paid staff - we are all volunteers. We are not funded by the Government at all. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small.

BH Update 02/22/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:43 pm (PST)
Fabio was out today to do some hooficures. Classy still doesn't like anyone touching her back feet. Touch her legs anywhere and she is fine but touch her feet and oh my gosh she'll kick you from here to Texas! Legacy, Silver Belle and Aaleyah Belle were good. But guess who didn't want to go back to her paddock? Yep, that's our Aaleyah Belle - she just wanted to plant her feet and slime Pam!
Morning Star is more handsome each day. He's looking for a forever home. He's a beautiful mover and has a great personality - there is never a dull moment with him!
Indy trying to catch up with Marsha to see what he can get into. He's pretty comical too - he's a very good boy.
Little E and a couple of the boys hanging out.
The Paso case is moving forward. Some of the horses will be leaving over the next week for their new forever homes. If anyone needs transport Pam (Double B Equine Transport http://www.doublebequinetransport.com/index.html) does a great job. Her number is 352-427-0474 and she does transport out of state. Please remember that if a horse is being transported out of state it needs a Health Certificate in addition to a Coggins. These horses are all very kind and every one of them deserves a good forever home. I'm still not feeling well but hope to get to the Paso farm for a bit tomorrow. The volunteers at the Paso farm and here at the rescue are doing a great job
too - we appreciate all of them very much - we couldn't do what we do without their help!

HARRISBURG - A Chester County woman accused of selling thoroughbreds for slaughter after promising to put them up for adoption will avoid prison by agreeing to enter a first-offender program.

"We agreed under certain conditions that she enter the first-time offenders program," said Francis Chardo, Dauphin C

Hog Heaven Newsletter - February 2012
Hard to believe that it is already February! We ended 2011 with 5 adoptions! Princess Jordan, Muffy, Skeeter, Miss Lilly and Pumpkin got their dream of a new family for the New Year. That was a great ending to a very hard year. We finally have snow. It has been a horridly muddy winter.

We have started off 2012 with great fund raisers this month. The Punxatawney Chili and Wing cook-off invited us back to be the recipient of their fund raiser on Ground Hog Eve. What a nice way to spend my birthday raising money for my dream. Inside the IUP Culinary School, warm and toasty and tasting great chili and wings.Entries are open to anyone and no entry fees. So, mark your calendars and get your chili cooking for 2013’s chili cook-off. With leap year, ground hog eve is on a Friday, and then just stay and visit Phil on the knob!

Pumba the 6 month old potbellied pig is still looking for his forever home. He walks on a harness and has done very well in the house (no accidents) since he came to us November 22nd. He goes outside and down the steps to go to the bathroom. Due to his being raised indoors and coming to us in the winter, he has been indoors. He does get into everything a 2 yr old would get into! Once the weather breaks, he will be transitioned to an outdoor pig. If you are interested, please give us a call or shoot us an e mail.

As always, we want to thank you, our supporters for your continued support. Without you, we would not be able to continue.

BHFER Update 02/19/12
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:45 pm (PST)
We hope everyone had a great weekend. It was busy here, as usual. The winds today were horrible - anything that could blow away, did. The temps tonight are going down into the low 40's so we had to blanket some. Here are some weekend pictures.
Rolling out some big hay bales. There were more fence repairs done to make them safer for the horses, waterers were cleaned, it was just another busy working weekend.
The Paso's haven't been groomed in a long, long time - there are some serious tangles!
More hay - that's me on the phone (been there a lot lately).
Little Red getting ready for a trim. He was a good boy.
One of the mares getting a trim.
One of the studs went home on Saturday and is doing great (and yes – studs will be gelded). And the little guy that left last week is doing awesome. It's really rewarding to see the changes in them - good food, turnout time, and TLC goes a long way! Studs that are now available, provided another already approved adopter doesn't step up in the next day or so, are #'s 3 and 13. Stud #'s 4 and 7 are pending. Status can change because people change their minds for whatever reason. We may find a different way to do
things for the mares - it's very time consuming to try to keep up with all of this and it does slow down the process.
The farrier will be here at the rescue this week to do some hooficures – if anyone would like to help there will be at least 6 horses done.
We'd like to thank everyone that has helped in any way with the Paso's. And to those that continue to support our herd here at the rescue - thank you all for everything you do. And to our volunteers - thank you so very much for caring and giving your time to help. We have some fundraisers coming up soon to help with the costs of the rescues here. We have many nice horses looking for good homes - we're updating info and pictures to go on the website which is also in the process of being redone.
I may not post tomorrow night - our daughter is a participant in her high school's FFA pageant - we hope she wins! We hope everyone has a blessed week - God bless and again, thank you all!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Injured horses rejected at Mexican slaughterhouse
LEBANON, TN (WSMV) -
New documents uncovered by the Channel 4 I-Team indicate that in January, several horses from Three Angels Farm in Lebanon were so badly injured that they were not allowed to enter Mexico, where they were expected to be sold to a meat-packing company.

It's COLD down here in FL!
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Mon Feb 13, 2012 5:02 am (PST)
Good freezing morning from Florida! It's 22 degrees and our power is out. Running on generator - power went out around 5 am. Hopefully it will be back on soon. At least the sun is out!
Little Miss Kami Comet still looks adorable in her pink blanket. She had her 2nd birthday on February 10th.
This was taken yesterday afternoon. We've been going through more hay with the temps going down in the teens. Hopefully the temps will warm up a bit soon.
Baby Girl and Indy tucked in blankets. Indy doesn't know pink is for girls.
Have a great day everyone!

Theresa

Happy Valentine's Day from BH!
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Tue Feb 14, 2012 5:14 am (PST)
All of us here at Beauty's Haven wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day!
The "kids" will be putting up cards they received in the mail today. I will be gone for a good part of the day having an MRI done in Gainesville but when I get back we'll share the cards and take pictures. It's always fun when they get cards!
I've received updates on Harley since he left from his new mom and he is doing great. He's very happy to have large areas where he can run and play. He loves his new friends. He gets lots of attention daily and has settled in as though he has been home for quite awhile. He's happy which makes us all happy.
Ghost - the little Paso gelding we took in a few weeks ago is doing great! He's filled out nicely and is a real sweet boy.
We made quite a few phone calls last night to let people that have applied to adopt one of the Paso Fino's that they were approved. They were all very pleased - and excited! Two of the mares posted have potential adopters. Will be regrouping with Carla this evening to review which studs are still available.
Have a blessed day everyone!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Brave is coming Back.....
Posted by: "Paula" horsehelpers@yahoo.com horsehelpers
Mon Feb 13, 2012 9:50 am (PST)
Due to an unforeseen situation, dear Brave that has done nothing wrong will be returning this week:( In 12 years no horse was ever returned until Brave was returned 6 month ago when his adopter lost his job and could not keep Brave at the stable any longer. Unfortunately it has happened again, Braves new owner of only a month and a half has lost her job and the lease to the stables she was running plus the home her and her mother were living at. They only have until the end of the month to leave and they have 7 horses plus boarders with nowhere to go. Brave did nothing wrong he seem to be having bad luck with adopters. His picture is on the website www.horseincorp.org and he needs a new home again, there is no adoption fee just a qualified owner to step up. Paula

MERS ended 2011 with 34 Call Outs.
We have responded to 4 Call outs so far in 2012.
Very interesting occurrence over the last couple of days.
MERS responded to a call out on Thursday February 09 in the Franklin County area. We had only been to this location one time prior, and it was for the same horse. It was exactly one year ago to the day, February 09, 2011.
MERS responded to a call out on Friday, February 10 in the Wildwood area. We had only been to this location one time prior, and it was for the same horse. It was exactly one year ago to the day, February 10, 2011.
Here is a link to the call out on February 10th. This was an extremely exhausting call, and required many different techniques to end up with a positive outcome for the horse.

Harley Update
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Thu Jan 26, 2012 5:41 pm (PST)
Tried to get an update out earlier today but I'm having computer problems that are still not totally resolved. So, this is a quick update to share good news about Harley - Dr. Ryan was out to examine his eye today.
"But I don't want Dr. Ryan or anyone poking around my eye anymore! It's better and I want it to stay that way! I'm not moving!!"
I told to Harley that Dr. Ryan was there to look at his eye and hopefully would remove the lavage and that he may not have to get the eye meds any longer. I explained to him that it wouldn't hurt and that if he would cooperate it would get done much faster. That's all it took - a simple explanation and request and then he complied!
"Ok Dr. Ryan - I'm ready for this shower thing in my eye to come out – I really am tired of the meds. If you take it out I'll lower my head for you, ok?" J
Well - the eye looks good! Harley was very happy to get the lavage out an I'm happy that I don't have to medicate his eye any longer. And I'm very happy that it appears that they got all of the cancer! Only time will tell - but it really does look good!
It's only because of help from others that we were able to help Harley - thank you all for caring about this wonderful horse! God bless you all!
Sincerely,
Theresa

UPDATE! Mike
Posted by: "rescue@rochester.rr.com" rescue@rochester.rr.com horserescue1
Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:36 pm (PST)
I am on a two week hiatus from chemo right now so there's not much going on. On 2/2 I go for another ct scan to see if the tumors have shrunken or not. Hopefully they have but I have another chemo session coming up on 2/6 for three days in a row and then another Nulasta shot on the 4th day then two more weeks off before my last chemo sessions. Hopefully, none of you o0r your family members will have to go thru this. The chemo drains all your energy and many people get nausea from the treatments but I haven't. The side effects are loss of sense of taste and the raspy vioce which may come back or it may not. No guarantees. I have lost the beard and the hair on my head which tends to make me colder even at 70 degrees in the house. At night in bed, our big cat Bubba likes to wrap himself around my head but I think he likes the warmth. He takes up the whole pillow so there's only a a little bit for me.
We're down to 13 horses here now with two more set to go out(Cali and Sylvia). The rest most likely won't be adoptable. We have a woman from NYC coming in next week to meet with us about possibly taking the rescue over. She would live here and is closer to our age so we'll see how that goes. She's well qualified with lots of horse experience and office experience.

Federal I.D. 43-2024364
January 24, 2011
Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, Inc. located in Jones, Oklahoma, is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that strives to improve the lives of neglected, starved, and abused horses. We provide equine rescue regardless of age or disability. We promote and teach horse care and humane, natural methods of training horses. Our primary focus is Animal Cruelty Cases. We work closely with the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office with their Equine related Animal Cruelty Cases. We also assist any other local/rural county sheriff’s office who request our assistance.
Rescues:
Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, Inc., celebrated our 10 year anniversary on December 23rd, 2011. It is hard to believe that we have been rescuing horses for 10 years now, and every year seems to bring more and more horses. We ended 2011 with rescuing 130 horses from animal cruelty and neglect. We successfully adopted out 99 horses into forever, loving homes in 2011. In the last 10 years,
we have rescued 805 horses. We currently have 111 horses in our care. We have been blessed to have so many wonderful horses come into our lives. We are so thankful for our wonderful supporters, adopters and volunteers. We can’t continue to rescue horses without each one of you.
Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue is asking for your support. We are struggling to find and purchase enough Hay for our rescued horses. With hay prices doubled, our expenses have doubled and it is becoming difficult to stay ahead. We are now seeking another hay supplier, as we have already purchased all the hay available from 2 hay producers. We have currently located hay, but it is now $115.00 a bale. We feed 24 round bales every 10 days, which means we are spending an average of $2200.00 a week just for hay, not including veterinary, farrier, grain, and your normal monthly expenses. If you are able to make a
donation, regardless of the amount, we are in urgent need of assistance.
Another way to help us, is to consider adoption. If you are seeking to add a horse to your family, please come visit our rescued horses. So many of the wonderful horses are seeking their forever, loving home. In order to encourage adoptions, we have reduced our adoption fee’s through February 15, 2012. They want nothing more than to be loved and cared for. They will provide you with so much more in return, than you could ask for. Please consider adopting a rescued horse today.
Meet Ozzy. Ozzy came into our rescue program on October 16, 2011. Ozzy came from the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division along with 1 other horse as an animal cruelty case. Ozzy is a Beautiful, Sorrel, Quarter Horse, Gelding. Ozzy is estimated to be 15 years of age. Ozzy is a former Quarter Horse race horse. Ozzy is extremely emaciated and was infested with internal and external parasites. Ozzy is a sweet boy, very smart, loads in a trailer and loves attention. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him. We will update as he progresses. Please consider making a donation towards Ozzy's rehabilitation.
Meet Tidbit. Tidbit came into our rescue program on January 4, 2012. Tidbit came from the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division. Tidbit is a Beautiful, Bay, Pony, Mare. Tidbit is estimated to be 15 years of age. Tidbit is super sweet, very smart, loads in a trailer, stands for the farrier and has such a sweet dispostion. She appeared skiddish at first, but once she settled in, you can tell someone used to love this sweet girl. Tidbit is swayed back and also has sclerosis. She needs some dental work done and a lot of weight gain. Tidbit is a sweet girl and will make someone a wonderful horse once she has rehabilitated. We will update as she progresses.
Please consider making a donation towards Tidbit's rehabilitation.
Meet Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick came into our rescue program on January 11, 2012. Kirkpatrick came from the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division along with Hildago as an animal cruelty case. Kirkpatrick is a Beautiful, Bay/White, Paint, Gelding. Kirkpatrick is estimated to be 5 years of age. Kirkpatrick has a body score of a 2. Kirkpatrick is extremely sweet and loves attention. He stands for the farrier and loads in a trailer. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him. We will update as he progresses. Please consider making a donation towards Kirkpatrick's rehabilitation.
Ozzy, Tidbit and Kirkpatrick are only 3 of the horses in our rescue program that need your support. We have so many wonderful horses in our program, and so many with needs that ask for your assistance. From horses with lameness issues that need treated, to horses with severe fungus issues, emaciation, wounds, etc., Our horses are our top priority and it takes a lot to properly care for so many rescued horses. Whether you make a monetary donation, adopt a horse, or simply say a prayer for Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, we truly appreciate your support.
Because of YOU and your heartfelt generosity, we are able to save these horses and many others from an uncertain death. We ask for your assistance as we have so many more horses in our program that need your help. Our average monthly expenses now total $8500.00. If you can please help us, continue to save rescued horses, please make a donation to:
Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue
17667 Markita Drive
Jones, Oklahoma 73049
or you can donate on-line through paypal @
www.blazesequinerescue.com
We are currently caring for 111 horses in our rescue program. We have many wonderful horses that are seeking their forever, loving homes. I hope that you will consider adopting a rescued horse. Whether you are able to make a donation or adopt a rescued horse, both help us tremendously.

Adoptable Horse of the Month
Meet Kiki. KiKi came into our rescue program on August 9, 2011. KiKi came from the Stephens County Sheriff's Office. KiKi along with 14 other horses were severly starved and neglected in Marlow, Oklahoma. Sadly, one of the horses seized by Stephens County died within 48 hours of the seizure at the Vet Clinic, due to the extreme neglect she had suffered. The remaining 14 horses are currently in our care and being rehabilitated. KiKi is a Beautiful, Sorrel, Quarter Horse, Mare. She is estimated to be 7 years of age. She is super sweet and loves attention. KiKi is in good body condition, body score of a 4. KiKi is pregnant, estimated to be 4 months into her pregnancy in August. Update 12/19/2011 KiKi has gained a lot of weight and looking great. She is super sweet and loves attention. She is a pocket pony and follows you
everywhere. KiKi is broke to ride. She is a bit lazy, but once she gets going, she does great. She just needs some tune up time and miles and she will be a great horse. KiKi has a current negative coggins, up to date on vaccinations, deworming, hoof maintenance and teeth floating. If you are interested in giving this sweet girl a forever, loving home, please submit an adoption application or call/email to schedule an appointment to come visit KiKi.

Hey! My friend took him in last week! Thanks for checking up on us! :)
Original message:
I have a sweet 22 year old tb, free to good home. My husband has been out of work for a few years now and I just can’t afford him anymore. A few months ago he got kicked in the head above his right eye, and is recovering from that. His eye sight in that eye comes and goes, some days he's rideable some not so much! He loves to ride in the arena and jump too! totally sound no health issues except his poor eye! He seems to do well when we give him bute every 12 hours and clean his eye at least once a day. My vet thinks he will recover completely, but not sure when, he says it just takes time.
If you know of someone who will take good care of him please let me know! Here is a pic of him!
Thank you for your help!

Sassy TB M needs home or goes 2 auction (CA)
Hi Janice, friends at Wild for Life Foundation/Lifetime Equine Refuge contacted SCTR about Sassy and asked if we could take her. We really are on zero intakes, unless we can raise a year's sponsorship to support a horse. Not only did they raise the funds we requested, but they picked up Sassy today and brought her to our Norco facility - so Sassy is with us at SCTR (today was her "deadline").
She is un-raced and her progeny records show that although she was bred to a TB stallion twice, she lost one baby while he was still a foal (a colt) in 2005, and there is no report of a second foal at all.
We're thrilled to have been able to take her in and very grateful to all of Sassy's friends :)

Baby Ray and Legacy
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Sun Jan 22, 2012 7:08 pm (PST)
Here are some pictures taken of Baby Ray and Legacy spending some time together before Baby Ray left this past Friday.
Silver Belle, Amadeus, Baby Ray, Legacy, Aaleyah Belle - all running and playing.
The return trip. Legacy pretty much always let Baby Ray run ahead of him when they would play - like he was big brother.
Six out of eight legs off the ground!
A little one on one time with Baby Ray before leaving.
This is one of the hardest things to do - letting them go. But this is what we want for all of them. Baby Ray is at wonderful foster home where he will get training, lots of TLC, and this will likely lead him to a forever home. Baby Ray will always be a part of us, a part of the rescue, a part of many human hearts.
And now a trip down memory lane.
Our darling, brave, strong, lovable Baby Ray. He came home in our mini-van. Malnourished, blind, and very sad.
He was so depressed - he wanted his mommy. So, we found her and brought her home. Baby Ray found peace and contentment and grew stronger.
Then we raced against time to get him stronger (mentally and physically) for surgery - his odds were better if it could be done before he was 6 months old.
Arriving at UF for his initial examination. He was a very brave boy at the hospital for his surgery.
Baby Ray and Legacy's first time playing together - December 2009. And their first birthday celebration in May 2010!
Casper trying to keep up with "his boys."
And they continued to grow and have fun together.
Still growing! And their first lesson in loading - they actually went for a ride around the block - Legacy was in front.
And then there were the water games - they both love water! Baby Ray would often try to get Legacy up when he wanted to nap.
Our baby boys have grown up. While Baby Ray is now at a foster home getting lots of TLC and training, Legacy is still here and is in line for training. I know when the time is right they will both make their forever humans very proud. Their original owners had thrown them away like they were trash.
Although they arrived here separately as babies, each was alone and very
sick from neglect, they never gave up and we never gave up on them. They overcame all odds. They are precious and priceless and always will be – I will always be very proud of them.
And I thank all of you for being there to support us and what we do - helping those that can't help themselves. Miracles do happen - God bless you all!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Baby Ray Video and a Paso Fino
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Sat Jan 21, 2012 5:38 am (PST)
Well, take look at this short video. It will make you feel good – every horse deserves their own little girl!
Yesterday was her birthday and look who arrived yesterday afternoon!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_DfoQrV83Q&feature=related
This young lady and her family will be taking very good care of Baby Ray.
They will train him and help us to find him a great forever home.
Also - I'm going to look at a 15 year old Paso Fino gelding this am that I got a call on. He needs a home. I'll know how good, or bad, his condition is once I get there. Will report when I get back. Would there be anyone
interested in a Paso gelding?

Update on Pony
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Sat Jan 21, 2012 6:08 pm (PST)
Well, the darling little pony is here. We picked him up this evening and he has settled in - I wouldn't have been able to sleep tonight had we not picked him up!
Welcome home - let's get rid of that halter! He got a bath before I first met him this morning - he does have a nice winter coat.
It will take some time for him to put on needed weight and grow stronger but he will. He's now on his road to recovery - thanks to many. And what a sweet boy he is!
He's got much kindness, gratitude, and light in his eyes - his name is Ghost.
Thank you to everyone that made it possible for this sweet pony to come to the rescue! Please forgive me if I haven't responded to your emails or posts on FaceBook (which I'm still learning how to use) today - once the wheels were put in motion to help Ghost the day was non-stop! I'll try to get caught up tomorrow. But please know that we appreciate every one of you and your support. It's only because of others helping us that we can help those in need like little Ghost. Donations are greatly appreciated – no amount is too small and all donations are tax deductible.
Update on Harley: Dr. Ryan stained his eye yesterday and changed his eye medication to include Dex. If we don't see an improvement in a week it may not be a good thing. Please pray for Harley.
Update on Haley: Today was the first day we've seen her feel even a little bit better. She got a good medicated bath for a skin condition and she was started on medication to treat EPM and is also getting some homeopathic remedies. The day Dr. Jackson worked her Haley we were told that we should see an improvement in her by Monday so we're 2 days ahead of schedule! Please pray that we continue to see Haley improve.
Update on humans: Tired!
I'll update more tomorrow - it's been a really busy day. J Have a blessed day tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Theresa

New post on Straight from the Horse's Heart
Horse Trainer Sold Over 100 Horses To Canadian Slaughter House
by R.T. Fitch
A Pennsylvania horse trainer is facing felony charges after she allegedly sold as many as 120 horses to buyers for a Canadian slaughterhouse, according to court documents.
State police say that 24-year-old Chester County-native Kelsey Lefever -- a well-known horse trainer and former Devon Horse Show competitor -- promised owners she could find good homes for their horses when they could no longer race, according to the Paulick Report, a news website for the thoroughbred industry. What she really found for these horses, was a quick death, according to court documents.

BHFER Update - finally!
Posted by: "BHFER" bhfer@earthlink.net horsn4fun
Tue Jan 17, 2012 6:26 pm (PST)
I have been trying to get a detailed update out on others here at the rescue for a couple of weeks. A lot has been happening and there has been little time at the computer.
This is the elder TB mare (24 yrs old) that was part of the herd of 22 that we are working with AC on in finding good homes for. She has gone on to her new home along with a mini mare from the same case.
This is one of the mini mare's hooves - obviously neglected for quite some time. She got a hooficure before leaving for her new home.
And this is another horse from the same case. A beautiful Paint gelding that has been adopted by one of volunteers - congratulations Kylie!
Last weekend, by the time we got finished hauling and having adopter's pickup their horses, we were down to four that needed homes. Two of the four are the Mustang and the retired rodeo bucking horse - they still need homes. The third was the mini mare that has since gone to a new home with her older TB mare friend. And the last was a stunted and neglected little Paint - there was no way we could leave this little boy behind. While the Mustang and rodeo horse still need homes - they are in pretty good shape and seem to be hardy and easy keepers. But this little Paint needed help and a place to go. He was underweight and his mane was so tangled - his feet never trimmed. He was hesitant to human touch at first but once the halter was and I started to rub on him he calmed nicely. This was the first day I met him.
His eyes stayed with me since that day - they are loving and kind.
Here he is a week after I met him - he had gained a little weight and hiseyes were brighter. I could almost swear I heard him saying "Please take me home - I'll be a good boy!"
As I was getting ready to pull away that day two of the horses wanted to leave with us - including the little Paint that had no home to go to and nobody wanting him.
So now we have the very friendly little boy that I named Takoda-Blue (Takoda is Native American that means "friend to everyone") here at the rescue. He's had his feet trimmed and is looking happier - he holds his head up high now and prances around. Watching the transformation in horses after they arrive here is just amazing - very heart warming. Takoda has become used to his flymask - he has a pink nose that will burn. We will be working on manners and other basics. Takoda-Blue needs a home - but until a home is found we need help with his care. Would anyone like to help sponsor him?
Some bittersweet news - Buttercup left for school (
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Quest-Horsemanship/179935105363147?v=wall&viewas=0 Quest Horsemanship) this past weekend. She will be one of Gary's very best students - I'm sure! It was really tough seeing her off but we know she is in good hands. Buttercup got to spend some time with Gary during his visits these past few months and she is very comfortable with him.
"But mom - I don't WANT to go to school!" Well, I guess she changed her mind because she's settled in fine at Gary's and is doing well. We'll post updates as she progresses.
Look at these 2 cuties - Baby Ray and Baby Girl. Baby girl is doing wonderful - an absolute doll! Baby Ray has a pretty thick winter coat - Baby Girl has a pretty pink coat. J
Gary and Meagan visited again this past weekend and Meagan wanted to visit Aaleyah Belle right away! Aaleyah still loves to slime - everybody loves her - look at that most famous tongue! And look at the human smile - Aaleyah makes everyone smile that spends any amount of time with her!
Gary worked with Baby Ray some to get to know him over the past few months. Gary told a family that he knows all about Baby Ray - they came up and met Baby Ray and fell in love with him! So - some more exciting news - Baby Ray will be leaving for his foster home soon where he will get lots of TLC and
training! His foster family, Chris, Jenna, and Carole will be sending updates and we'll make sure to share. It will be another bittersweet weekend! Our Baby Ray is growing up and will melt his way into someone's heart. He will find a very good home and make his human very happy - I just know it! How I wish we could keep them all forever - but we can't. We need to make room for others that are desperate for help.
Bouie and Frodo are doing well and have nice thick winter coats. They still make us all smile.
Here are Gentleman and Sayan sharing some hay. GMan is doing well. I know he misses Jake, we all do, but he seems to have accepted Jake's crossing - perhaps he even has some peace of mind knowing that Jake is no longer uncomfortable and that he is running with the heavenly herd. GMan is moving around better and his eyes are bright. But still, when we look at GMan we will remember Jake as his best friend - always.
Haley is still feeling pretty uncomfortable - not just in her backend but all over it seems. One of our holistic vets, Dr. Jackson, will be out tomorrow to treat her - we truly appreciate donations that came in today to cover her treatment tomorrow - thank you very much! It was warm enough yesterday that Haley got a good bath. Kami was next in line but the sun started to go down. Kami is still Kami - she still thinks she's a little
racehorse and I'm not about to tell her otherwise! J
Harley is doing very well - he seems healthier and happier each day!
And this is my little Popper dog! Yes - she's running around and doing much better! I'm so thankful to everyone that helped her - she still makes me laugh! I don't think she'll be popping in and out of the water buckets anytime soon but she is coming around. This past weekend she was able to even climb the stairs on her own!
God bless and thank you all for your continued support! Our upcoming days are planned to be busy but hopefully I won't go so long without putting out a more detailed update about happenings here at the rescue. Have a great week! Oh - please don't forget about the "I AM Zaynah!" portrait fundraiser - it ends soon!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Haley and Harley

I'd like to ask for prayers for little Haley and for Harley. When cleaning Harley's eyes this morning I saw something new in the corner and felt the need to call Dr. Ryan out to look at it. He took pictures back to the hospital - I should hear back from him tomorrow morning.
And little Haley isn't doing well. Dr. Jackson was out yesterday and treated her. She definitely has neurological issues but we don't know why. It could be trauma (it's thought she may have flipped over backwards) or it could be an autoimmune issue or it could be both. It was hard to get good pictures yesterday - we had the windows in the barn closed. The weather was horrible - it was cold and rainy all day long. Haley pretty much stands in one place all day and looks like she feels bad. I don't like seeing her
this way.
We're going to have to move Kami to another paddock tomorrow - she is just too much for Haley right now and is causing her stress which isn't helping. Her momma is sick and doesn't feel like playing.
Please keep Haley and Harley in your prayers.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Harley got out for a bit today...

It's a beautiful day so I let Harley out around the house for a little while today.
Little E really does look little next to Harley. I wonder what Little E was thinking?
Harley had a great time getting out for a bit. He's back in his paddock now and munching on his hay. His eye seems to be doing ok.

Theresa
