Voluntary recall of horse feed

http://www.news10.net/news/article/182006/2/Voluntary-recall-of-horse-feed

According to the FDA, Western Feed, LLC is voluntarily recalling two lots (M718430 and M720280) of Kountry Buffet 14% feed because it may contain monensin sodium (Rumensin).

The feed is packaged in 50 lb. bags bearing the Payback logo with the attached tag identifying the product as Kountry Buffet 14%.

Monensin sodium is a medication approved for use in some livestock and poultry species, but can be fatal to horses if fed at sufficiently high levels.
The lot number (M718430 and M720280) can be found towards the bottom of the tag, below the Feeding Directions.
This feed was distributed Dec 2, 2011 through Dec 15, 2011 to retailers in Nebraska and Wyoming. Retailers receiving product from the lot in question have removed it from their stores.
Western Feed had received a report of some horses that had died as a result of consuming the feed. Initial testing by a private laboratory has indicated the presence of a potentially harmful level of monensin sodium (Rumensin) in these two lots. Further follow up testing is underway.
The symptoms of toxicity vary with the amount of monensin ingested by a horse. Trace amounts may cause a horse to go off his regular feed, show signs of colic and appear unwell for a few days. Larger amounts will cause a horse to show more serious symptoms within a few hours including colic, stiffness, sweating, a lack of co-ordination and the inability to stand.
Customers who purchased Kountry Buffet 14% from lot M718430 and M720280 should stop feeding the product immediately and call Western Feed LLC at 308-247-2601, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM MT.
At this time, the limited voluntary recall only applies to Kountry Buffet 14%, lots M718430 and M720280. No other Western Feed, LLC products and no other lots of Kountry Buffet 14% are involved.

A similar recall happened in January.  The same ingredient - monensin sodium (Rumensin) - was found in horse feed product
distributed in California, Nevada, and Oregon.

Please cross post!!

We don't feed Science Diet, however, you might know of someone who does use this food for their dog.

Apparently Science Diet has obtained a new patent for their pet food with a method that would increase the shelf life of their products.  It's coating that consists of "low density polyethylene", which is basically PLASTIC!

Wikipedia says the following:

LDPE is widely used for manufacturing various containers, dispensing bottles wash bottles, tubing, plastic bags for computer components, and various molded laboratory equipment.  It’s most common use is in plastic bags.

Other products made from it include:

a.. Trays and general purpose containers

b.. Corrosion-resistant work surfaces

c.. Parts that need to be weldable and machinable

d.. Parts that require flexibility, for which it serves very well

e.. Very soft and pliable parts such as snap-on lids

f.. Six pack rings

g.. Juice and milk cartons are made of liquid packaging board, a laminate of

paperboard and LDPE (as the water-proof inner and outer layer), and often

with of a layer of aluminum foil (thus becoming aseptic packaging).[4][5]

h.. Parts of computer hardware, such as hard disk drives, screen cards, and

optical disc drives

i.. Playground slides

j.. Plastic wraps

Read more here:

http://www.ehowcom/about_6540370_low-density-polyethylene-safety.html

Here's the patent information: http://tinyurl.com/SDPFC

Do other dog fod companies do this?  I see that the ehow link says that low density is safe for kids to be around when used in playground equipment, but they don't EAT IT!  Your thoughts?

Petco Food Bowl Recall

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 07:40 AM PDT

Petco has announced a voluntary recall of certain stainless steel pet food bowls due to contamination with radioactive material.

The following company statement provides full details:

Petco has determined that one of its foreign suppliers used stainless steel mistakenly containing small quantities of Cobalt-60 when fabricating certain orders of certain SKUs/models of stainless steel pet food bowls. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive material commonly used in industrial gauging equipment and other uses.

We don’t know for certain how it got into our product, but we believe it came from scrap metal that had some Cobalt-60 accidentally mixed in. The affected products were found to emit low levels of radiation.

The Cobalt-60 levels in the affected products are far below State and Federal regulatory limits. All of the expert testing conducted on these products to date indicates that there is no health risk to the public, to our associates or to pets.

To our knowledge, the affected products were limited to two cargo containers that entered the United States in late May and early June. We’ve also determined that the affected products pose no health risk, and were and are safe to be handled by our associates.

The issue was discovered by Customs and Border Protection agents during a routine import screening of one of the containers. That container was held at the port and never reached Petco. The second container had previously cleared Customs and reached Petco’s distribution network.

Upon learning of this issue following the delivery of the affected products to our distribution centers, we promptly retained experts to examine the potentially affected products, and those experts determined that the SKUs examined were safe for handling.

Out of concern that products from the second container reached our stores, we removed from our store shelves and from our website all products from the supplier that produced the bowls.

We have confirmed that the vast majority of all of the affected products remain at Petco distribution centers, are quarantined outside and never reached our stores.

We also confirmed that very few affected items were actually sold to consumers. We are working to contact those customers to inform them of the situation and to retrieve those particular bowls.

Petco has notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and a number of state governments, and is in the process of notifying other appropriate states as we continue to collect and verify information.

The Illinois state government did its own testing and issued a news release stating that “a person would have to hold one of the bowls against their chest for roughly six and a half days to receive a dose of radiation equivalent to a single chest X-ray,” and that “these bowls do not pose an immediate health risk.”

Petco tested other stainless steel pet products it carries from other suppliers and found no similar issues. The supplier that produced the affected products has told us that it has already instituted special screening procedures. We are in the process of reviewing those procedures ourselves, and we have put a hold on future shipments until this issue is resolved.

Customers who purchased these products between the dates of May 31 and June 20, 2012, should bring it to their local Petco store for a full refund. If you have any questions, please call Petco Customer Service at 877-738-6742.

SKU numbers can be found on labels inside and on the bottom of the bowls.

You can report complaints about FDA-regulated pet food products by calling the consumer complaint coordinator in your area.

Dog Owners Beware

Posted on May 29, 2012

One of our beloved dogs, Jack, a 6-year-old, chow-lab mix, died yesterday. His death was very unexpected and traumatic. Although, our dogs did not receive the same amount of attention as they did before Bobby was born, they were still loved dearly. Bob walked them religiously every single day. Jack loved, loved, loved, playing fetch. Tennis balls were his favorite. When we discovered that he had died, we began questioning what happened to our sweet Jack.

On Monday, May 7, we took both of our dogs to our vet for their annual check ups. It was a very routine visit. They were both checked for heartworms and parasites, weighed, and listened to. They were deemed normal and healthy. They both received their rabies vaccinations, and a new drug (via injection) that was recommend by our vet, ProHeart 6. Our vet simply said, “Hey, we have this new shot that we can give them for heartworm protection instead of an oral preventative. It’s easy because it’s only one dose every 6 months.” Sounded good to us, so we agreed. That was it. That was all the information we received, and—by our own fault—all we asked for.

Both of the dogs seemed fine the first week home, then Jack started acting differently. He didn’t want to go on his daily walks. He didn’t want to fetch his tennis ball. He didn’t want to eat his dog food. My husband even tried giving him some leftover steak from our dinner, and Jack wouldn’t eat it. We knew something was up, so we took him back to the vet on Monday, May 21.

The vet discovered that Jack had a fever, but could find nothing else wrong with him. He was given a steroid shot and some antibiotics in case he had an infection, and we were sent home. Over the next few days, Jack seemed to feel better. He was still a little lethargic, but was eating and perked up when we threw a ball or petted him. He seemed on the mend. We thought he must have just had a virus and was getting better. It did not even cross our minds that he was so gravely ill, so we continued with our Memorial Day plans to go to the beach.

We returned from the beach to a grim discovery—Jack dead in a pool of blood and vomit. His poor little body was crumpled up in a strange way, like he had literally just fallen over dead. We took him to an animal ER where they confirmed that he was dead, and we paid to have his body cremated. The vet at the animal ER stated that it appeared to be a heart attack or cardiopulmonary problem that killed him.

That evening, as we wrestled with grief and trying to explain death to our 3-year-old son, we began to question what on earth had happened to our previously perky puppy. Okay—he wasn’t a puppy, but he always behaved like a frisky, fun puppy, and he certainly wasn’t an old dog. We considered the possibility that he ate something bad, but his vet had all but ruled out a GI problem. We went over and over what was different, the only thing we had changed was their heartworm medicine.

We googled the shot he had received a few weeks earlier, ProHeart 6. The drug was originally made by a division of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, but the drug company Pfizer acquired Wyeth and all of its holdings in 2009. Pfizer’s own website lists side effects of the drug as lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and death. (Source: Pfizer) Jack had exhibited exactly all of those symptoms… in that order.

After doing further research, we also discovered that the drug was originally pulled off the market in 2004 for a high rate of adverse reactions to the drug. “According to an informed veterinarian, ‘Proheart caused more deaths in one year than all of the oral heartworm preventives combined did in ten years. When the FDA notified Pfizer that their drug was causing a problem, the manufacturer claimed it was due to the vaccines’ being given at the same time. The FDA looked at the data again and told them the dogs involved had been getting their vaccinations all along and the only difference was the Proheart. That’s when the FDA informed the company of their intent to pull it and the company then voluntarily took it off the market.” (Source: The Senior Dogs Project)

Pfizer was allowed to re-market the drug in 2008 with the following stipulations: Pfizer agreed to add additional warning labels to the drug packaging, and agreed to mandate that pet owners be given a drug fact sheet and be made to sign an “informed consent” document. Pfizer went even further as to mandate web-based training for veterinarians who gave the drug, and issued several “Dear Doctor” letters to all veterinarians regarding the adverse effects of the drug. (Read one of the “Dear Doctor” letters here.)

The part that bothered and alarmed us the most was this line from the drug’s website: “ProHeart 6 dog owners must be advised of the risks of ProHeart 6 and sign an Owner Consent Form prior to the first administration.” (Source: Pfizer)

We were never shown a fact sheet on the drug, never “advised of the risks”, and certainly not given an Owner Consent Form” by our vet to sign. (In hindsight, we feel that we should have asked more questions about the drug, but we trusted our veterinarian.) If the side effects had been presented to us as they have in our research, we would NOT have consented to have Pro Heart 6 administered to our dogs.

We also found some literature suggesting that ProHeart 6 should not be administered at the same time as vaccinations: “Allergic reactions, sometimes serious, have been reported when ProHeart 6 and vaccinations have been given at the same time. Talk to your veterinarian about the risks of administering ProHeart 6 at the same time as vaccinations.” (Source link here.) Our vet administered ProHeart 6 at the same time as Jack rabies vaccine, and distemper/bordetella.

The drug’s information page from Drugs.com states the following: “Owners should be advised of the potential for adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, and be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug toxicity. Owners should be advised to contact their veterinarian immediately if signs of toxicity are observed. The vast majority of patients with drug related adverse reactions have recovered when the signs are recognized and veterinary care, if appropriate, is initiated.” (Source: Drugs.com)

When we did recognize that something was going on with our dog, we did what we thought good pet owners are supposed to do. We took him back to the vet. The vet should have recognized that he was having an adverse reaction to the ProHeart6 that she administered to him  (without our “informed” consent) only weeks earlier and treated him appropriately. If the vetrinarian had recognized his symptoms, he could have recovered. She did not, and as a result, our otherwise healthy dog died. Now, we are left waiting on the drug to work its way out of our remaining dog’s sstem praying that she does not fall victim to the same fate.

Stories of dogs that died as a result of being administered this drug are abundant. Check out any of the following links for more information, and please, ask for all of the facts, side effects, and more information when your vet (or doctor) recommends this drug (or any drug). ProHeart 6 provides no additional benefits or protection than safer, oral heartworm preventatives.

Letters & Data by the Drug Manufacturer from the FDA’s Website:

May 30 UPDATE:
I truly appreciate all of your condolences and support, and all of you who have shared this blog on your social media sites. It makes me feel much better knowing that we are raising consumer consciousness.

We aren’t trying to tell you what to do with your pets, just encouraging you to gather information before making any decisions.

A vet that works for Pfizer, the drug manufacturer, contacted us today to ask us if we would let them do a  necropsy on Jack. (They had already called the crematorium to make sure his body had not been cremated yet.) We agreed. In fact, we felt relieved and feel that we will get some answers soon. His body is now on the way to the University of Florida to be examined by experts.

Our other dog does not seem to be exhibiting the same symptoms ( thank goodness).

May 31 UPDATE:
Pfizer called back today to let us know they were planning on reimbursing us for the money we paid to have Jack cremated.

His body is being sent to a different lab in Florida and it will be 4-6 weeks before we get a full  necropsy report. They are doing tissue samples, toxicology… The whole nine yards.

Pfizer seems as interested in getting answers as we do. Which is more than we can say for our (former) vet.

The vet has not responded to our requests for answers. (I.e. Did the vet who administered the shot complete Pfizer’s mandatory training? Why were we not given the “Owner Consent Form” and drug fact sheet? Why did the vet not recognize Jack’s symptoms when we took him back in?)

I have received lots of emails and messages from others who have lost their pets. My heart goes out to you. Some have asked me to publicly name the vet. I’m not going to do that (yet). I may, or may not, do that when we receive the autopsy results. At that time, we will know who is truly culpable. In the meantime, just be sure to ask your vet (or doctor for that matter) for lots of information before consenting to anything.

For those of you following this story, further updates will be posted to my ”Justice for Jack” (http://ashleysassaman.wordpress.com/2012/06/02/justice-for-jack/) post

Apex Pet Foods announced today that it is issuing a voluntary recall of all dry dog food formulas manufactured on January 24, 2012. Although there have been no animal or human illnesses related to Apex Dog Food and the product has not tested positive for Salmonella, the company has voluntarily initiated this recall out of caution to ensure the health and safety of consumers and their pets.

Owner contacts FDA over suspect chicken jerky dog treats

STAUNTON - When Joann Loring's dog Rastaman started behaving strangely Tuesday night, pacing, hiccuping and trying to chew up everything, she wracked her brain trying to figure out what was wrong with her mutt.

"I didn't know what to do," Loring said.

After patting his stomach and getting him to burp a few times, Rastaman seemed to feel better, but Loring wanted to make sure whatever made him sick didn't happen again.

What she thought was likely the answer came a few days later when she saw an FDA warning someone had posted on Facebook, advising dog owners that certain brands of chicken jerky were causing pets to get sick and some to die.

Although they weren't recalled because the FDA couldn't discern what in the treats was harming people's pooches, they did issue a warning in November about certain brands of chicken jerky.

The FDA had previously issued warnings for chicken jerky products in 2007 and 2008, but complaints began to drop off. However, they are soaring again with more than 600 reports of sick or dead dogs.

FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch them closely for any or all of the following signs that can occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite and activity, vomiting, diarrhea - sometimes with blood - increased water consumption and/or urination.

If the dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken jerky product, the FDA advises.

Owners should consult their veterinarian if signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours. Although most dogs appear to recover, some reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died.

Loring had been giving her dog Milo's Kitchen chicken jerky, one of the three big brands that the FDA is warning consumers about, as well as Waggin'

Train and Canyon Creek Ranch jerky treats or tenders, both produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co.

She started giving her dog the treats a few days before he became sick.

Loring reported the incident to the FDA, and after a 20-minute conversation the representative told her to hang on to the packaging and said they might ask her to send it in.

Although the FDA has not recalled the treats, Loring said she wants to make sure no one else's pets suffer.

Rastaman is fine now.

MSNBC.com finds "3 big brands may be tied to chicken jerky illness in dogs"

Internal FDA documents obtained by MSNBC.com found references to "at least three popular brands of jerky treats that may be associated with kidney failure and other serious ailments."

Red Alert!:

At the end of December, a local kennel donated 12 cases of Kirkland canned Lamb and Rice dog food. They said it was too rich for their dog because they all got sick. Did not think any problem with the food. I fed to my dogs, and to visiting dogs. Diarrhea for all dogs, puppy threw up 15 times. She survived...   Tesla and Dino did not. I contacted the company on Jan. 3 to say all dogs got sick. They said they did not produce that food. Four weeks later, one dead dog, next week, another dead dog.

Again I contacted Costco, and they contacted the manufacturer. Mind you...  similar food was recalled in 2007-2009 for melamine contamination. Over 400 dogs died.

I filed a report and waiting for request for the sample of food. I need to put out a warning of possible food contamination....is not verified yet...but the vet and I feel it will be. The*Kirkland Canned Lamb and Rice with expiration 2013. The cans I have say June 23, 2013*.  Please let your friends know. It would have been purchased in Nov.-Dec. 2012.

Please anyone that has a can, contact me directly. Do not return to Costco.

We need to let everyone know so more dogs don't die.

In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China. FDA advises consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs closely for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination.

FDA: Adulterated Animal Feed Seized
Filthy conditions, failure to correct violations prompted action at Kentucky facility

At the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. marshals today seized livestock and horse feeds stored under filthy conditions at the Bi-County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc., in Florence, Ky.

“The FDA will not tolerate a company’s failure to adequately control and prevent filth in its facility,” said Michael Chappell, the FDA’s acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. “The FDA is prepared to use whatever legal means are necessary and appropriate to keep potentially contaminated products out of the marketplace.”

During a recent inspection of the Bi-County feed mill, FDA investigators discovered live and dead mice and evidence of bird activity throughout the facility. FDA laboratory analysis of samples collected during the inspection confirmed the presence of rodent urine, rodent feces, rodent hairs, and rodent-gnawed holes in bags, in and around food products.

Acting on a warrant issued by the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Kentucky, marshals seized all FDA-regulated food products exposed to rodent and bird contamination at the facility. The seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because they were kept in conditions in which they may have become contaminated with filth.

Bi-County manufactures feed and stores commercial feeds received through interstate commerce. The products are sold locally to farms and stables. The products sold by Bi-County include:

Hi - I was concerned about this as well, so I wrote Blue Seal. This is
what they say:
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for asking Blue Seal!
Not a recall, actually...the carrot flavoring used in two batches of
Carrot Flavored Rounders is not palatable to horses-and horses just
refuse to eat them. They are not harmful or toxic in anyway, but if
you have any dated July 14 or July 23 please return them for exchange
or credit, your choice.
ALL other flavors, however, are perfectly fine.

Apparently 3 plants are involved - in Guilderland, NY, Harrisburg, PA, and Statesville, NC.

I have not seen this confirmed, but it is important to those who may have fed the recalled feeds!

I save some of my empty feed bags for garbage and do have bags with these codes and all has already been fed to my horses. My three other horses (not Friesians) that are fed a very small amount of grain seem to be fine.  My Friesian was fed a significant amount of grain daily and is now dead. I would appreciate any information on this recall.

Southern States Added to Feeds Recall List
---------------------------------------------------------
Horse Journal just learned that horse feeds made by Southern States
Cooperative Milling's Gettysburg plant have been recalled for
elevated aflatoxin levels. The recall was issued on March 28, 2008,
but posted on the FDA web site on June 11. The recalled feeds are:
•Reliance Hay Stretcher Pellet, lot G8015
•Select 12P pelleted horse feed, lot G8018
The recall involved 1,124 bags (28.1 tons), which included some sheep
feed, and is ongoing. The feed was distributed in the following
states: Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York,
Pennsylvania and Virginia. As of June 11, we found no notice on the
Southern States web site.
Horse Journal will continue to monitor the FDA's weekly enforcement
reports and keep you advised of any horse-related recalls--even if
they are several months after the fact.
We initially reported the first aflatoxin recall in our June 2008
issue. The full report is in our July 2008 issue, which will arrive
in your mailbox shortly. Recalled feeds include brands from Purina,

Subject: Jerky Treats

I am sending this message to everyone hoping that it might save a life. I just found out today about another problem with dog food/treats where ingredients came from China. This time it is chicken jerky treats. There has been no specific treat named.....just chicken jerky treats from that country.

One of the symptoms that eating these treats can cause is loss of appetite and weight loss as a result.

I had been feeding my kids chicken jerky treats that I bought at Smiths and a couple times at Walmart. They were Wagon Train jerky treats.

The package said they were all natural and 98% fat free. I thought I was feeding them something good. They all stopped eating. The vet thought it was due to the hot weather. Then Festis started getting sicker and ended up losing 5 pounds total. He started having seizures and then had the last one that was so bad we had to put him to sleep.

After hearing of this latest crap....I called the vets office. It all makes sense now. Why he stopped eating, why his blood work all came out fine...why we couldn't figure out what was going on. I stopped giving my kids the jerky treats after Festis passed away and their appetites came back.

I know this wasn't my fault. I know I thought I was doing the best for my kiddos. I just want everyone to know about this and to stop feeding this stuff to your dogs if you are. From this day forward I will make damned sure my dogs will never consume anything connected with products from China. First Peppermint was made sick from the first round (I was feeding her Organic dog food even) and now this  At the advice of my vet I submitted a report to the FDA on their web site.

Wellness Canned Cat Food Recall

PLEASE CROSS POST

Sent: Tue, March 1, 2011 12:05:20 PM
Subject: Wellness Food Recall
Wellness press release:
While recent laboratory testing found that most lots of Wellness canned cat food that were tested contain sufficient amounts of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), some of the lots listed below might contain  less than adequate levels of thiamine.  However, out of an abundance of caution, WellPet has decided to recall all of the lots listed below.
Cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss.  In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.  If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
The lots involved in this voluntary recall are:
Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13;
Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with 10NOV13 or 17NOV13 best buy dates.

Consumers who still have cans of cat food from these lots should stop feeding them to their cats and call us at (877) 227-9587 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern Time.  Consumers with further questions should visit our website at www.wellnesspetfood.com or call us at this same number.

Please forward on.

Aflatoxin is a  naturally-occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of the fungus  Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops. If your pet shows any symptoms of illness, including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea, please consult your veterinarian immediately.
The safety of our customers and their pets is important to Kroger. Aflatoxin contamination is a serious recall.  The Kroger Customer  Service number provided in the release was not open on the weekend; I do not  know the actual manufacturer of these pet foods.  The concern is the co-packing manufacturer using the same aflatoxin contaminated ingredients in other foods not yet recalled.  Please be cautious of pet food/treats made with corn, wheat, or soy.  To learn more about aflatoxin and mytcotoxins,  click here

Texas company dog treat recall

August 16th, 2010 5:32 pm

It's the fourth time this year that Pet Care of Amarillo, Texas has recalled pet food possibly contaminated with salmonella. The recall has been expanded to include all ten-ounce packages of  "Texas Hold'ems" and "Beef Filet Squares."

Salmonella is the genus name for a large amount of bacteria (over 2500). Each type is distinctly identifiable, but all are closely related. Salmonella causes diseases in humans, animals, birds, and especially poultry. The disease is characterized by symptoms referred to as food poisoning. For the most part, it is usually a mild disease, but nausea, vomiting,  and diarrhea can cause dehydration and lead to more serious health consequences. Medical care is always advised.

Caution to Dog Owners About Chicken Jerky Products
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution consumers about
a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the
consumption of chicken jerky products. The products—also called chicken
tenders, strips, or treats—are imported from China. FDA continues to receive
complaints of sick dogs that their owners or veterinarians associate with eating
chicken jerky products. FDA issued a cautionary warning to consumers in
September 2007.
Australian news organizations report that the University of Sydney is also
investigating an association between illness in dogs and the consumption of
chicken jerky in Australia. At least one firm in Australia has recalled their
chicken jerky product and the recall notification stated the product was
manufactured in China.
What is FDA Doing?
* FDA, in addition to several veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the
United States, is working to find out why these products are associated with
illness in dogs. To date, scientists have not been able to determine a
precise cause for the reported illnesses.
* FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial testing but has
not identified any contaminant.
* FDA continues to actively investigate the problem. Many of the
illnesses reported may be the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky.
Tips for Consumers
* Do not substitute chicken jerky products for a balanced diet. The
products are intended to be used occasionally and in small quantities. Owners
of small dogs must be especially careful to limit the amount of these
products.
If you choose to feed your dog chicken jerky products, watch the dog
closely. Stop feeding the product if your dog shows any of the following signs,
which may occur within hours to days after feeding the product:
- decreased appetite, although some dogs may continue to eat the treats
instead of other foods
- decreased activity
- vomiting
- diarrhea, sometimes with blood
- increased water drinking or increased urination Call your veterinarian if
signs are severe or last for more than 24 hours. Blood tests may indicate
kidney failure (increased urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests may
indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most dogs appear to recover,
some reports to FDA have involved dogs that have died. Consumers and
veterinarians should report cases of animal illness associated with pet foods or
treats to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator listed for their area at

(mip://00ed6c88/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html) .

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if
there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in
people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with
compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with
Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following
symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal
cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more
serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis,
arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this
product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or
bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only
decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers
with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or
humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these
symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The company stopped production at the Everson facility on July 29,
2008 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food
produced at the plant and two isolated cases of people infected with
Salmonella Schwarzengrund.
Even though no direct link between product produced at Everson and
human or pet illness has been made, Mars Petcare US is taking
precautionary action to protect pets and their owners by announcing a
voluntary recall of all products produced at the Everson facility
beginning February 18, 2008 until July 29, 2008 when we stopped
production.
In an effort to prevent the transmission of Salmonella from pets to
family members and care givers, the FDA recommends that everyone
follow appropriate pet food handling guidelines when feeding their
pets. A list of safe pet food handling tips can be found at:

*Petco FDA food seizure*

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 19, 2008

FDA Requests Seizure of Animal Food Products at PETCO

Distribution Center

Today, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration (FDA), U.S. Marshals seized various

animal food products stored under unsanitary

conditions at the PETCO Animal Supplies Distribution

Center located in Joliet, Ill., pursuant to a warrant

issued by the United States District Court in Chicago.

U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated animal food

susceptible to rodent and pest contamination. The

seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and

Cosmetic Act because it was alleged in a case filed by

the United States Attorney that they were being held

under unsanitary conditions. (The Act uses the term

"insanitary" to describe such conditions).

During an FDA inspection of a PETCO distribution

center in April, widespread and active rodent and bird

infestation was found. The FDA inspected the facility

again in May and found continuing and widespread

infestation.

"We simply will not allow a company to store foods

under filthy and unsanitary conditions that occur as a

direct result of the company's failure to adequately

control and prevent pests in its

facility," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate

commissioner for regulatory affairs. "Consumers expect

that such safeguards will be in place not only for

human food, but for pet food as well."

The distribution center in Joliet, Ill., provides pet

food products and supplies to PETCO retail stores in

16 statesincluding Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,

Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota,

Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas,

and Wisconsin.

FDA has no reports of pet illness or death associated

with consumption of animal food distributed by PETCO,

and does not have evidence that the food is unsafe for

animals. However, the seized products were in

permeable packages and held under conditions that

could affect the food's integrity and quality.

As a precaution, consumers who have handled products

originating from the PETCO distribution center should

thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap.

Any surfaces that came in contact with the packages

should be washed as well. Consumers are further

advised as a precaution to thoroughly wash products

soldin cans and glass containers from PETCO in the 16

affected states.

If a pet has become ill after eating these food

products, pet owners should contact their veterinarian

and report illnesses to FDA state consumer complaint

coordinators.

Important info for you and your pets!

NOVARTIS manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Neb. have agreed to voluntarily shut down.  It is unclear, but could be due to human medication errors is the pharmaceutical company that makes many popular human and pet medications.

I have included a list of those included in this "voluntary recall".  Pug Planet uses Interceptor, heartworm preventative for all our rescues year round.  Hopefully this does not raise the price of the competitor's products!  As of the latest update Feb. 29th 2012 the company has no idea when they will be able to reship product!

So, what does this mean for you and your pets? In order to prepare so that your pet does not receive a delay in treatment please call veterinarian to plan a course of action. Your vet can  recommend an alternative, so as to avoid any interruption in your pet’s therapy.
Is your dog or cat currently taking a Novartis product?
 If so, which one?

Sentinel Flavor Tabs® (flea control product)

Program Tablets and Suspension® (flea control product)

MilbeMite® (medication to treat ear mites)
Deramaxx® (pain relief medication)

Clonicalm SEE LETTER FROM NOVARTIS BELOW (used for Separation Anxiety)
Dear Doctor:
Novartis Animal Health US, Inc. is committed to delivering safe and efficacious veterinary products, and would like to inform you about a recent development involving CLOMICALM® (clomipramine hydrochloride) tablets.
Due to potential packaging issues at our manufacturing facility, there is a rare possibility that a wrong tablet may be found in bottles of CLOMICALM®. Novartis has not received any reports where a patient experienced a product mix-up, nor has Novartis received any adverse events attributable to a product mix-up. However, as a precautionary measure, we would like to extend the following recommendations.
1) Before dispensing CLOMICALM®, open each bottle and examine the contents for tablets that are broken or incorrect in color, shape or size (visual guide included).
2) Post a copy of the Dear Valued Customer letter issued by Novartis Animal Health in your clinic (copy included).
3) Distribute copies of the Dear Valued Customer letter to affected pet owners. Novartis Animal Health will send your clinic extra copies upon request. If you publish a clinic newsletter, please consider using the provided notice.
4) Report any abnormal findings to Novartis Animal Health at
800-637-0281.
5) Return affected product to Novartis Animal Health; call the aforementioned number for full details.
6) Inform your clients who have already received CLOMICALM® to examine tablets and refrain from administering any that are questionable in color, shape or size; and to contact Novartis Animal Health to discuss product return of affected bottles.
7) Keep records of communication with pet owners in patient files.
8) Ensure that any re-packaged tablet bottles are labeled with the product lot number.
As far as human meds are concerned:
Bufferin and Gas-X Prevention products with expiration dates of Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier.  Novartis says the products may contain stray tablets, capsules or caplets from other Novartis drugs.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials warned that some of Novartis’ over-the-counter pills may have been packaged with powerful prescription painkillers manufactured at the same facility.  The painkillers, sold by Endo Pharmaceuticals, may include Percocet, Endocet, Opana and Zydone.

FDA Advises Veterinarians of Recent Recall of Human Drug, Phenobarbitol
Drug is Prescribed for Animals Extralabel
March 10, 2011
The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has become aware of a human drug recall for Phenobarbital tablets. Phenobarbital is prescribed by veterinarians as an extralabel use for treating seizures in animals.
On February 5, 2011, Qualitest Pharmaceuticals voluntarily recalled several lots of Phenobarbital 32.4 mg and Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets 10 mg/500 mg due to a label mix-up between the two drug products. Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets were incorrectly labeled as Phenobarbital tablets 32.4 mg. As a result of this mix-up, pets may
unintentionally be given Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen tablets instead of the intended drug, Phenobarbital.
CVM has recently received 3 serious adverse event reports involving dogs treated with Phenobarbital tablets manufactured by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals. One report cited two of the three affected lot numbers for the recalled product. The remaining two reports did not provide the lot numbers

Limited Recall of a Heartworm Medication

Posted by: "Michelle Ives" mmives@comcast.net   shellyct

Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:51 am (PDT)

Mon Jun 9, 2008 8:42 pm (PDT)
FDA News FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 5, 2008 Media Inquiries: Kimberly Rawlings and Mike Herndon, 301-827-6242Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA FDA Announces Limited Return of Heartworm Drug to U.S. Market The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced a limited return of a reformulated heartworm prevention drug for dogs, which had been withdrawn because of serious, life-threatening adverse reactions, including loss of appetite, lethargy; vomiting, seizures, difficulty walking, jaundice (a yellowish appearance); and bleeding disorders, allergies, convulsions, followed in some cases by death. ProHeart 6 (moxidectin) Sustained Release Injectable for Dogs, NADA 141-189, manufactured by Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, Kan., is an approved Injectable sustained-release heartworm prevention product for dogs. FDA is concurring with its limited return to the U.S. veterinary market under a risk minimization and restricted distribution program designed to
manage the re-introduction of ProHeart 6 to provide for safe, appropriate use of the product while minimizing risk to dogs. "This is the first veterinary drug to be marketed under a risk minimization and restricted distribution program. Numerous drugs for use in people have been successfully marketed under similar programs," said Bernadette Dunham, D.V.M., Ph.D., director, FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. "While we concur with the limited return of ProHeart 6 to the U.S. market, we strongly encourage veterinarians and pet owners to report any possible adverse reactions." Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition for dogs. The parasite that causes heartworm disease is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. The risk minimization and restricted distribution program is intended to educate veterinarians and pet owners regarding the possible risks associated with the use of ProHeart 6. Therefore, Fort Dodge Animal Health is requiring veterinarians
who wish to purchase ProHeart 6 to register with the company and participate in a Web-based training program prior to obtaining the product. The return of ProHeart 6 to the market is based on results of additional toxicological and pharmacologic studies by Fort Dodge Animal Health coupled with the low adverse reaction frequency in international markets. In 2004, Fort Dodge Animal Health agreed to voluntarily recall the product from the market based upon FDA's concerns regarding reports of serious adverse reactions in dogs following the use of ProHeart 6. In response to FDA's concerns, the manufacturer conducted additional testing of its product, which indicated that residues of the solvents used in the manufacture of ProHeart 6 may cause allergic reactions. The manufacturer has improved the manufacturing specifications for ProHeart 6 to decrease the presence of those residues and has marketed the product in international markets. Few adverse events have been reported with
this reformulated product. The ProHeart 6 label and Client Information Sheet have been revised to include updated safety information. The new label includes warnings not to administer the drug within one month of vaccinations, and to use the product with caution in dogs with pre-existing allergic diseases including food allergies, allergic hypersensitivity, and flea allergy dermatitis. The label also warns against administering the drug to dogs who are sick, debilitated, underweight, or who have a history of weight loss. In addition, the label's Post-Approval Experience section has been updated to include information about adverse reactions based on voluntary post-approval drug experience reporting. Dog owners who suspect their dog is experiencing an adverse reaction to ProHeart 6 should immediately contact their veterinarian to initiate appropriate veterinary care. Veterinarians should contact Fort Dodge Animal Health to report any adverse events at (800) 533-8536.

Recently the home improvement stores have stocked their shelves with a plant called the *"Sago Palm".* This is a decorative houseplant that you may be tempted to purchase. If your pets ingest ANY part of this plant it will cause liver failure. Even with aggressive veterinary treatment 70% of these pets will die. We implore you to keep your household free of this plant. We are devastated when we are unable to help
your pets.

OT Dangerous Mulch - Harmful to our pets!

Begin forwarded message:
Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.
Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and
wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving
Friends and family.
Please tell every dog owner you know.  Over the weekend the doting
owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use
in their garden. They loved the way it smelled, and it was advertised
to keep cats away from their garden.
Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat
and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was
typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in
any way.  The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her
morning walk.  Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died
instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic
to dogs and cats.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that It is
True that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa
Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees depending on
each individual dog).  "However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."
This Snopes site gives the following information:
 http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and
other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient
called 'Theobromine'.  It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like
Chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff
and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.  Just
a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be
aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate
which is toxic to dogs.  Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic
quantities of theobromine, axanthine compound similar in effects to
caffeine and theophylline.  A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of
garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions
and died 17 hours later.  Analysis of the stomach contents and the
ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of
theobromine.

Treats Not To Give To Your Pets:

The other day, a friend commented that she sometimes gave her dogs small pieces of avocado.  We know about chocolate, grapes, and other things being toxic, but avocados are also a no-no.  Note the link below to people foods that are toxic to pets.  Please forward.  Thanks.

Forbidden Fruit: Popular Avocado Can Poison Your Pet

avocadoA slice of avocado may be the perfect addition to your sandwich, but it can have serious consequences for our feathered and furry friends. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, IL, pet poisonings from avocado and avocado-based foods like guacamole are a consistent risk. In 2008, the Center managed 115 cases involving ingestions of avocado, and though an overwhelming 83 percent of those incidents involved dogs, the most devastating effects were seen in birds, rabbits and certain large animals like horses and cattle.

A native of Central and South America, avocado (Persea americana) is a subtropical tree that produces a pear-shaped fruit prized for its high fat content, vitamin-rich “meat” and smooth texture. Unfortunately, the fruit also contains a toxin called persin that’s harmful to animals.

"Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark all contain the toxic principle known as persin,” says Dana Farbman, CVT, Senior Manager of Professional Communications at APCC.  In curious canines, clinical signs of ingestion can include gastrointestinal distress, vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects are seen in dogs who’ve nibbled on significant amounts of a tree’s fruit or branches.

Pet parents should prevent their animal companions from coming into contact with avocado by placing the fruit—or that festive bowl of guacamole—out of reach. For those lucky Californians who have an avocado tree in their backyards, keep a close eye on your pet when he’s outside, and don’t mistake the toxic fruit for Fido’s gnarly tennis ball.

As always, if you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, please call your vet or the ASPCA’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435. For more information about people food that’s toxic for pets, please visit APCC online.

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday.  He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1 AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't

call my emergency service until 7 AM.
I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but... Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said  to give IV fluids at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220 ... He continued to vomit and the owners elected to Euthanize.
This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk.

Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

Onions, chocolate, cocoa, avocadoes and macadamia nuts can be fatal, too.

Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them.
Confirmation from Snopes about the above .....

Pet Health Care on a Budget

Pet health care on a budget is possible once you realize that you cannot do it by cutting corners on food or supplements! The actual cost of 3 vet visits a year (including annual check up) is hundreds-of-times more expensive than the difference in cost between low quality pre-packaged food and better food combined with a high performance supplement program.
