Rescues In Need 2

Rescues often have times where they heed to issue a call for help.  Most of the rescues are 501c3, which means that any donations to them are a tax deduction.  They rely heavily on donations.  Please take a moment and donate to one of these rescues.

New Jersey:

While Arabian horse owners and trainers are preparing for the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in sunny Scottsdale, AZ, another event is unfolding in the snowy, muddy mountains of West Virginia.

Terry Figueroa of the Arabian Rescue Mission in NJ is working with the family and attorneys of Fazal A. Khan, deceased, in moving 50+ Arabians in decline from their farm. Mr. Khan had been sick for quite some time and the family was doing their best to take care of the horses. They have reached a point where good homes and the safety of the horses is their priority. “There is no humiliation in needing help, as long as help is asked for” says Terry. This family reached out for help last year and received none. An acquaintance suggested they contact me and I drove down that same week. On arrival at the farm, 54 horses were found in varying degrees of condition. Thankfully a local gentleman, with no horse experience stepped in and has been providing the basic needs for these horses. Even with the mild weather and Mr. Russell’s help, winter has taken its toll. More than 7 have died over the last few months, some to old age, some to natural causes, others to infections and injury and a few to deterioration, making them easy pickings for the coyotes. Most were in decent weight, but quite a few were thin, parasitic, covered in rain rot and with multiple injuries needing medical attention.

On 2/25th & 26th, there will be a “cooperative seizure” moving all the horses, en masse to the Hookstown County Fairgrounds in PA. ARM desperately needs DONATIONS, supplies such as buckets, bedding, hay, feed, antibiotics and volunteers to help care for these horseswhile in rehabilitation and awaiting permanent or foster homes. We will need vets to provide medical and possibly farriers. We will also need local people with enclosed stock trailers to facilitate the move to the staging area in Hookstown, 1 ½ hours away.

With seizures and rescues on the rise in frequency across the country, the number of horses in crisis is taking a toll emotionally and the financial burden is staggering. Terry has been working to change the way horse seizures and rescues are being conducted. Since 2003, Terry and her organization have assisted in the process of finding over 450 horses new homes.

The recent seizure of Arabians nationally highlights how a breed specific rescue organization can make a huge difference in providing care and eventual placement into foster or permanent homes. “My ultimate goal is to have representatives and facilities available throughout the United States who could be ready to step in and confidently be hands on leadership from the very beginning of the rescue process".

Terry has always known that horse owners of every breed have their own tightly related internal communities who help each other when a need arises. Terry adds, "If an Arabian horse needs a new home, who better to call on than another Arabian horse owner? Frequently, local agencies may not be equipped to care for large animals like horses. They just don't have the necessary knowledge or facilities to expedite effective rescues that are equine related. In the case of severely abused or starving horses, time and proper action are of the essence. There are also strict protocols in place which dictate what documentation must be completed in the event that the horse owner may be charged in a court of law.”

"Volunteers are the backbone to any successful rescue and dedicated to the horses. It's a very emotional experience and many of those wind up attached to a specific horse they cared for each day, and will step up to offer a home" Terry states.

Donations may be made via PayPal to info@arabianrescue.org or can be mailed to Arabian Rescue Mission, 42 Glen Road, Colesville, NJ 07461. Visit the ARM website atwww.arabianrescuemission.org to contact them and read about this 501(c)3 organization and click the DONATE button to help with your tax deductible, life-saving donation.

My heart is so lost ....

so some of you may remember kaleb and kahleif the two horses from MD that were going to be abandoned on their property. we were able to find two fosters for them, however time is running out and they BOTH still need permanent homes.

kaleb is doing well, however he's still nervous and scared and will take a quiet, gentle handler to help him get over his trust issues.

kahlief has been ridden and is very nice under saddle, however still has issues because he is a stud. he is being gelded with the care and attention of an excellent vet near his foster home. WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH FUNDS!

cost is approx $350 incl trailering and the stay at the hospital. the vet will keep a close eye on him and will euth if necessary (though he thinks he is healthy enough for this otherwise we wouldn't proceed). with all the other horses in need, we couldn't raise the funds for the closed surgery and with him under a vet care at the clinic god forbid there are any issues we can ensure that he does not suffer. this is his only hope for a home right now as he was not doing well turned out with others and was having a very hard time focusing.

donations can be made to info@arabianrescuemission.org via paypal or right through the site at www.arabianrescuemission.org. PLEASE help us get this boy safely through this surgery and buy him a little bit of time - as of July, he's got no where to go and i'd hate to see him come through this to end up without a person of his own.

thank you!!!!!!

I am concerned about some older geldings that are at Hines BLM corrals and trying to advocate for them.
A sanctuary in NM is interested in 17 year old #9727, listed as a SUPER NICE GUY in the info about him. They need transportation to NM.
Their website is www.cimmaronskydog.org and contact info is there. They can only take one at this time. If you can spread the word, it may make it possible to save this guy.
Thanks,
Jery

Seeking pasture/rehab board

Wright Rescue is seeking short term rehab/pasture board for 2 horses within 300 miles of 11717.

1 mare “Emma” is a 15.1hh 19yo Belgian and is for adoption. Her feet are almost 100%. Would be best on pasture, great safe for kids ride, also drives. Should have 24/7 turnout or free stall access unless bad storm forces lock down for the night. Stay until adopted.

1 gelding “Keeper” just started hoof rehab. 15.3hh appaloosa gelding. Will need sheets/blanketing as he has been a school horse all his life and it doesn't look like he will be doing much coat growing. I will send with blankets. 10-15 week stay likely.

Both need grain and supplements 2X daily that I can supply or buy if available locally. Since I will be away, feet picked/grooming will need to be done, or I can find a willing volunteer in your area.

I also have rolls of fence tape and two carport shelters if that will help at all. I have many boxes of tack for sale I could bring to the rescue on drop off as well. Please respond with your availability and prices.

Feel free to xpost/fwd.

Thank you!

Important Announcement

Posted by: "Mike Dodge" rescue@rochester.rr.com   horserescue1

Fri May 27, 2011 12:40 am (PDT)

Dear Friends of H.O.R.S.E. Rescue,
The time has come in the life of this organization when we must make some painful decisions. There are no donations coming in to speak of and we are unable to support the 23 horses nor the 15 rescued cats and 3 dogs under our care with our meager Social Security income. Our total household income is a little over $2200 a month and out of that we must pay our mortgage, car payment, food, winter heat(kerosene, fuel oil and propane) and vet payments for all the cats and dogs. We lost our beloved Lab, Otis, in April and his cremation was $150. He was the friendliest dog in the world and was the spokes dog for the rescue. He is greatly missed. Abby, one of our 17 year old cats, is on daily dialysis due to renal failure. Scooter, the cat who was dropped off here a year and a half ago after being thrown out of a car window, was hit by a car and his pelvis was shattered. He spent four months in a cage in the living room keeping quiet so he could hopefully heal. He did heal but now he is on a special diet to keep his stool soft or he cannot move his bowels. Rowdy, another cat, has crystals in his urinary tract and also has a special diet. These recurring vet expenses take a toll on our income and, with the skyrocketing cost of food and fuel, our meager checks dwindle each month and we have had no increase in Social Security for the past two years.
We can no longer do the fundraisers we used to. The three active members of our board of directors average 65.33 years of age and doing candy sales, yard sales and the like is no longer possible as we just don't have the manpower. Besides Chris being on total disability and on constant pain medication I now have, what I believe to be, a pinched nerve in my lower back causing problems walking more than fifty feet - even harder during the winter snows and spring and fall mud. I went to the chiropractor four times during one week's time recently with no success and I can't afford the co-pays to continue treatments.
As many of you will no doubt remember, last October we mailed out an appeal letter asking you to, again, help the rescue. As a result of the 610 letters we sent out we received over $16,000 in cash donations and in kind contributions. That lasted until the end of February. At that time, based on our success with the Christmas letter, we composed a new letter and sent out 1000 copies to residents with a household income of over $50,000, 45 years of age and up and have been known to donate to animal charities in the past. Each letter cost a little over $1.00 to print and mail. The total response was two checks for a total of $225 incurring a net loss of $805.00.
As of today, we have enough money for about a week's worth of hay and grain. The situation is not good at all and, unless some miracle happens by the end of summer, we will be forced to close the rescue. Of the 23 horses here now, many will have to be put down as they are not adoptable due to age or injuries. Still others have issues that new owners won't want to deal with. Some have been abused so badly that they aren't even touchable yet. We have been waiting for dry weather so we can work with them in the hopes of having them trust people again so they can be placed. The four young ones are certainly trainable but we no longer have the stamina to do much training and must pay someone to teach them how to be horses. We have no money to do that.
It will also bring tears to our eyes to see the opportunities we offer to 4-H groups, Girl and Boy Scouts, disabled and/or emotionally challenged youth and adults, kids at risk, etc., etc. to not only help us out; but, to learn strength in times of adversity, how to earn trust, how to recognize and report abuse of both animals and humans and so much more from these magnificent 4-legged “therapists”. Our recognized and respected reputation as a viable site for community service requirements – whether educational or court ordered – will also fall by the wayside so not just the animals will suffer, but those in the community, which we try to give back to, will suffer also. It will also mean the end of Friends of H.O.R.S.E. Rescue, the SUNY Geneseo sanctioned community service club for students who sometimes look to us for guidance towards their futures – especially the pre-vet students who gain so much knowledge helping to care for the minor wounds and injuries that befall every horse at one time or another. It will mean for our disabled volunteers who are not “acceptable” at other facilities that they may not get the opportunity to work with horses – or any other animals.
If we had to blame someone or something for our situation it would be the economy as no one, or very few, have the income to care for a horse. And, we would blame ourselves for waiting so long to take action. We are getting too old and frail to do what has to be done. What we really need is for someone younger to take over the rescue. We have been trying discretely to do that but to no avail. When (if) the horses leave or are put down we will auction off the assets, pay off the liabilities and donate any money left over to another charitable horse cause. We hope it doesn't come to this but, again, unless something happens in the form of a windfall we have no other option. We won't sit here and watch the horses starve while there is still something we can do about it - hopefully with your help.
We will have to close the rescue before another winter arrives unless a miraculous source of substantial and/or consistent funding is found. The herd will need to be disposed of. At present it appears that thirteen will need to be put down. Serenity, Zeke, Bella, Jenny, Jazz, Mo, Tootsie, Jate, Bonnie, Vixen, Ruby, Holly and possibly Calico (even though she is only four years old) will all become victims of the economy. John, our farrier, found a serious crack in Cali's right front hoof that has started at the coronet band and working downward. Once the crack fully opens up, the farriers don't have any idea on how to treat this problem. They have found several horses in the area with the same problem and once the crack is open there will be no stability in that hoof and she will most likely lose the hoof wall. That would make a total of fourteen horses that WE, their caretakers who promised them another chance, will have to “destroy” unless someone will take them, which is highly unlikely. That leaves only eight or nine that can be placed but, as we mentioned earlier, two have issues with being caught and handled due to past abuse, and this weather has lessened the time appropriate to work with them.
In addition to the financial worries, our volunteer base has dropped to practically nothing. We do have the college kids from SUNY Geneseo during the school year but they're gone for several times on breaks – including five weeks during December and January – when we often have the worst weather. And, our community volunteer numbers have dropped to only one or two people each morning and only one on one afternoon during the week. Many people come once with “a desire to help” and then never come back again – most likely because it's often hard work in bad weather.
We wish the news was better, but the reality is that we are no longer able to continue our mission. We are angry that the government sends billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan along with numerous other countries and yet not one dollar in state or federal aid is allocated to help America's horses. There is something wrong when we(the government) send money to people who want to kill Americans. If we had the money the government spends to purchase one drone aircraft we could survive and feed the horses off the interest. As of this August, we will have struggled for eighteen years to save as many horses as we can, but we can't do it alone. We need money and ideas on how to fund this program so, if any of you have any ideas, we would certainly like to talk with you.

I wanted to emphasize that we will not be putting any horse down unless absolutely necessary for health reasons. We are trying our best to stay afloat for as long as possible. I’m afraid that in the heat of the moment and suffering from depression over our situation that I put my mouth in gear before engaging my brain. Yesterday, we had one of our donors who read our website came over and gave us a couple of ideas that we are going to start immediately. I want this to continue but it can’t without more community involvement. This is not just about saving a few horses but also the people that come here with special needs and children that we can help to become responsible adults by working with our 23 equine therapists for no cost to them.

Sadly, we have 6 horses in the NC Triad Region who are losing their adoptive or foster homes due to the poor economy. They need a foster home to go to asap as both families are downsizing and moving. If
anyone is available in NC to foster one or more, please contact us. This is always so sad when they lose their family, but USERL is committed to helping them find another. Can you help us on the next leg of their future? Some are aged and need a retirement home, others are trained under saddle.

Well yes, I know this is NOT a dog or cat but even Horses NEED great rescue HELP in these trying economic times!! I know most of u on here are dog/ cat rescue folks but everyone has contacts in various walks of life. Some of u are horse people also on here.
What most of u don’t know about me as I was a horsewoman all my life from 4 yrs old on and still own an elderly 33 yr old horse. I still get horse help emails occasionally and do my best to forward or help. This email is from a friend of mine who does TTouch work on all types of animals.

We’ve posted for rabbits, pot belly pigs, and such so now let’s Post for this pretty little pony who has had an abusive / neglectful life and has sustained a broken ankle as a result.

Thank goodness, she has found safe harbor, but needs surgery!.

Please Forward on to others so Nina may secure the necessary funds to correct her broke ankle. This will help her tremendously as she ages to balance all her weight and live a long happy life.

Thanks to each one of u on the list who work daily in different ways to make animals’ lives better.

mini/pony needs help in central NC

2 weeks ago we had a mini mare dumped at our farm. She needs surgery for a dislocated/broken pastern. The surgery which costs about 3K is more than we can spend on one horse. Her options are as follows: She will be given to any person/organization that will have the surgery done, she can remain a permanent resident if someone wants to pay for the surgery, or she will be euthanized. I am looking for grants to help pay for the surgery. She deserves a chance - eating well, seems healthy otherwise, cute paint, sweet but shy. The vet has examined her and since she does not seem to be in pain I will not rush to put her down. I am hoping someone will come through for her. Pictures of Cocoa can be seen on our website: americasequinesanctuary.com (new arrivals page) This message may be crossposted.

We are a rescue facility in Northern ND. Our website, which is new, is www.flyingvhorserescue.com.  We are still trying to figure the site stuff out and how to put in a donation button which does not work when I copy and paste the code.  We currently are holding 20 horses, and have placed 4 on a care lease contract for 4H kids to use during the 4H season this year.  So far all is going good and the horses are doing well.

We need building supplies, anything would be appreciated, we have, as you know, only so much we can do out of our own pocket.  We are looking for corner posts, fencing planks, posts, wire and stable stall supplies as we are trying to put in several stalls before winter for the ones who will need to have all the help they need during the winter months.  We are also in need to build a bigger and better round pen so we can work with the horses and get them for those who need ground work done.

WYOMING COURT ALLOWS WILD HORSE GROUPS TO INTERVENE IN LAWSUIT
On November 2nd, US Magistrate Scott W. Skavdahl, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming granted intervenor status to three wild horse groups, ISPMB, American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign and the Cloud Foundation in a lawsuit brought against the U.S. Department of Interior by Rock Springs Grazing Association (RSGA).
In the late 70's, ISPMB developed an agreement with RSGA to set numbers of wild horses in the checkerboard area including 500 horses on private lands.  In July, the RSGA petitioned the court to enforce a 1981 court judgment against the BLM to remove wild horses from private lands spanning 40 miles wide and 80 miles long, covering approximately 2 million acres.  This area includes Salt Wells Creek, Great Divide Basin, White Mountain and Little Colorado Herd Management Areas (HMAs).  The lawsuit seeks to remove wild horses on both public and private lands.
The motion to intervene was filed by the highly regarded public interest law firm Meyer, Glitzenstein and Crystal.   Intervenor status was granted on the basis that the wild horse groups' interest in "preserving the wild horses in their current habitat are directly threatened by this lawsuit."
"We are pleased that this court decision will allow us to be a voice for the future of Wyoming's mustangs," said Karen Sussman, president of the ISPMB.  "As a party to the original agreement establishing population levels in this area, we will vigorously defend the Wyoming's wild horses and work toward an agreement that keeps them free where they belong on our public lands."
HORSE SLAUGHTER COULD BEGIN AGAIN
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Please call your Senator or Representative (from your state only) listed below and ask them to keep the Moran amendment in the 2012 Agriculture bill which will prohibit funding for USDA inspections of slaughter plants.  As an American taxpayer, we do not want to fund foreign companies that want to open slaughter plants in our country killing our horses.
Please call as soon as possible and voice your concern.

This was pulled off of Alex Brown Forum:

A friend of mine runs "Lonesome Dove Equine Protection" a horse rescue. They have lost the lease on the property they are renting. She needs to be out no later than Oct 5th, and is searching for a farm to rent. She is qualified to buy but cannot close in the short time left. So is looking to lease for now.
If anyone knows of any suitable farms for lease within 100 miles of Arlington/Ft.Worth area of Texas please contact Angela at 817 229 4699 she currently still has 17 horses in her care. This is very urgent.

Texas and Surrounding States: Foster Homes Needed in Texas, Adopters

Posted by: "Dr. Jennifer Williams" equinerescue@gmail.com   equinerescue @ gmail.com

Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:40 am (PDT)
Please share with horse emails lists, message boards, friends, etc.
The pleas for horses needing help sometimes get overwhelming, so I hate to add another plea. But the fact is that between economic hardships and one of the worst droughts in Texas’ history, times are very hard for the horses here. Hay is scarce and expensive, and because of that fewer people are able and willing to foster or adopt.
We’re getting more and more requests to help starving and abandoned horses, and if we’re going to keep helping horses, we need some of ours to go to adopters and we need foster homes. So I’m turning to you all and begging for help.
We have many horses looking for their forever homes, and we’re waiving adoption fees on twenty-five of them right now. Some are companion (or pet) horses who cannot be ridden. But others are broke to ride or sound enough to be trained to ride. The horses whose fees are not waived all have much lower fees than ever before. We need to move these horses out! If you aren’t in Texas and are interested in adopting, send me an email. We’ll discuss out of state adoptions on a case by case basis.
If you are in Texas and have some room but can’t add another permanent addition right now, please think about fostering. We pay for pre-approved veterinary care, pre-approved supplements, pre-approved medications, paste de-wormer and $10 of each farrier visit. Other expenses may be tax-deductible since we’re a nonprofit. The horses you foster give you so much more than you put into them. You’ll become a better horseperson while making a very real difference in the lives of horses. You will be saving a life.
Please join us in helping these very needy horses. Their love and gratitude will be the greatest reward you can imagine.

Available for IMMEDIATE adoption/fostering:

Duchess, 23 yo red roan blanket appy mare. would do well with a considerate adult trail rider, exercise would be beneficial, she is a nice mare I think but cranky in the way of appy mares, and she cribs. She has done many things for people in her life and deserves to be taken care of. Not for a beginner, but may be fun for someone who understands her. Further info after I ride her a few times.

Serra: approx. 13 yo Arabian cross mare, chestnut with narrow blaze. In your pocket and rather pushy on the ground.Intensely focused when you present her with a challenge like loading on a trailer. about 15h, slim build, decent conformation and movement. Assumed to be unbroke. Obviously needs experienced handler.

Gabrielle: Arabian mare appears to be purebred, chestnut with large star, a little smaller and slightly less pushy than Serra, but all of the above would apply.approx 13.

Samwise the Brave: approx 18 yo Arabian gelding, dark mahogany bay with small star, about 14h, very cute, compact, somewhat straight in the hind legs but otherwise decent conformation. Shy, nervous, unbroke, but still seems to like people. experienced handler.

Aliyah and Artax: Arabian mare and gelding, approx 18 and 15 yrs old, appear to be mother and son. in need of pet/retirement home. Mare is easy to handle and very pretty, tall. Gelding is tough to catch, and handle. both greys.

Phoebe: 7 yo dark palomino paint mare. appears to be broke but green, decent conformation thought a little downhill, good movement. about 15-15.1h. very pretty, nice temperament. She is being further assessed and may be available for adoption or sale to an approved home for a higher fee to help pay for the others. She can be seen at a barn with an indoor.

YOUR KIND CONSIDERATION FOR CHANCE IS TAX DEDUCTIBLE UNDER OUR 501c3 Believe in Buster Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

OUR EQUINE CLINIC WILL ACCEPT DONATIONS - PLEASE INDICATE IT IS UNDER THE SYLVA SOUTHWELL ACCOUNT FOR CHANCE.

Please help us.  We purchased Chance for $300.00 from a feedlot bound for slaughter 5 years ago. He arrived here 300-350 lbs underweight. It took 6months to 12 to get his weight to where it should be. He then sustained an injury which cost us $4500.00. We DID NOT ask for assistance with this and paid out of pocket. It has been 2 years since that injury, and now we find out he has cancer. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP US GET THE CHEMO THERAPY FOR CHANCE. He has a good prognosis for treatment. We tried to find him a home for 3-4 years but the fact remains, people are dumping horses.

Chance is not rideable, he has something wrong with his back, so he is one of our pasture horses.  NO ONE wants a non rideable horse age 10 which is still quite young, when perfectly sound and rideable horses are not finding homes.

PLEASE HELP US.

http://magellan.chipin.com/chances-cancer-treatment

--

Dear Ms. Southwell,

Here is the estimate for Chance's chemotherapy.  Because of the unusual location of Chance's mass, it was necessary to research an alternative way of administering the Carboplatin (typically we use bead implantation, but this will not work for his mass, so we will be administering an injectable form).  It took longer to get the quote for this medication than we had intended.  I am sorry that you had to wait for this estimate.

Ideally Chance's mass will respond to two local injections. The first visit will include an ultrasound that will evaluate the margins of the mass. Both visits can be done at the farm.

The first visit that will include sedation, ultrasound of the mass and injection of the chemotherapy is estimated to be approximately $550.00.  The second visit will be close to $450.

If you want to move forward with this, the next step will be to call the clinic at 804.798.3281 and schedule a farm visit with Dr. Dewitt.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks a lot!

Travellers Rest Equine Elders Sanctuary was hit by a small tornado last night. All horses and humans are fine but they did sustain property damage. Last night Chris was reporting that at least one run in shed was destroyed and her house was seriously damaged.

I have no connection to TREES other than having lived in the area years ago and being located in the same state. TREES has an excellent reputation and deserves our support. While Chris is not asking for financial support at this time, I am sure that there are going to be out of pocket expenses.

This is a link to their website if you can send a small donation:

Please spread the word about this rescue's plight for me. I know it's not as big
as the horses in Egypt or the Mustang's, but I feel like it's the least I can do
for this rescue that helped me find a great home for my pony and my friend's
horses after she passed away. Thank you. I will pass on any words of
encouragement also.

A dear friend who runs a rescue outside of Gratiot, WI , had a tragedy on the
night of the big snowstorm. Her home and all of her rescue dogs burned to the
ground that night. Firefighters couldn't get there in time and the house was a
total loss. The family barely made it out with their lives. The horses are still
there and being fed each day. There is a benefit dinner and silent auction at
The Brass Monkey in South Wayne,WI on Friday Feb. 18th at 5pm. This is for the
TLC Rescue and donations can be made to Woodford bank in South Wayne, WI.
I can also personally take items, gift cards, etc. to the family that night.
Items can be dropped of at the Wal-Mart Vision Center in Platteville, WI C/O
Nicole. Or you can call/text me at 608-558-1631 or e-mail to set up a pick-up.
This is a husband and wife with a teenage son. Anything is appreciated. Prayers
and spreading the word are always helpful, too!
