Dear Horse Friends: I am heart-sick about this auction! My gut feeling is that many of these youngsters will go to slaughter in Mexico. The horse industry is in bad shape as must of us know. I get emails on almost a daily basis about horses needing homes. If these colts came from “the Canadian Border” that means they will be sold – no minimums because they’re sure not going to haul them back up north! If you are at all interested in buying one or more of these colts, please do! For all you QH and Paint fans, this seems to be a fantastic opportunity to get a registered nice baby. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD THROUGH ALL HORSE LISTS!
Thanks,
Becky

New Mexico:

Hello ABR's!

Next weekend, August 8 & 9 is another "All Breed" horse auction at Southwest Livestock in Los Lunas, New Mexico. This is one of the biggest "killer horse auctions" in the SW, and being that the co-owner of the auction is the main kill buyer its especially hard to attend as if a horse falls below "meat" price, the horse is kept and shipped to Mexico in one of their many single decker horse/stock trailers . So the hopes of finding a "bargin horse" at a cheap price is hard to find, the only bargin horses ( low priced ) are usually foals, skinny horses.

Regardless I am going next Sunday with a friend who is looking for a horse. I am not sure if I will purchase one, as last time I went I came home with 4 horses but the urge to save a life I am sure will be high. I will be documenting the auction and prices, and taking pictures. Saturday is the "Grade" horses, Sunday is "non grade" aka meat horses . I would go Saturday, but I have to work.

I have tried to go to this auction again in the past, but couldn't get the strength to go. This time I have a friend who has 2 acres, and is looking for a buddy horse for her horse so I know we will save at least one life that day..

If anyone in the area is going to attend, or would like to please send me a email as the more the merrier. Also any other requests please send me a email. I will bump this next week a couple of times as well.

Thanks!

Kristen

Subject: Horses at Auction
There is a livestock market in Central Bridge, NY (Cobleskill area). It is
mainly a cow auction on Tuesdays. The last couple of weeks they have had
some horses come in which are selling cheap ( 100 - 150)- horse dealer/meat
buyer Jim Brant is there buying. This coming Tuesday (24 Feb) they have several
horses coming in - a couple ot TBs, some arabians and others. I have heard
11 - 15 horses. Meat buyers will be there. If anyone can do anything the
auction is listed in the Country Folks under Empire Livestock - Central
Bridge auction.

Please spread the word.
Thanks

Sorry I did not get to respond to this question before leaving for
the auction. Next auction is Feb. 13 in Equinunk, PA at C&S
Stables.
Starts at 5:00 pm. Usually have 3 tack dealers before
horses sell.
Last night: About 15 horses there, mostly middle-aged trail horses,
a few more "expensive" horse, and two really scruffy babies (yearling
to two year old, but needing some major TLC). A morgan 2yo went for
$45. Not a lot of tack, but lots of barn supplies. Should be more
horses and tack at the next one. Still, for just 15 horses, I saw
three that were in desperate need of a good home and good care. All
of the others looked pretty good, and several were no-saled at such
low prices ($200-$800).
Also watched for a few stolen horses, but did not see anything we
recognized from fliers.

South Carolina:

Hi Brandi,
There is an auction in Bennetsville, SC called Shiloh Sales. It isn't an actual KB auction but, the number of buyers that have contracts to fill, with KBs has grown tremendously in the last several months. There are a lot of local families that attend, as well. Their sales are the first and third Monday of every month but they move the dates around a bit for holidays. I went to the Labor Day sale ( not intending to buy anything but lead ropes). At the end of the auction, one of the 'dealers' with a contract, was loading a pen of 20 TB mares onto a stock trailer. They had not been run through the ring but had numbers.... the last mare wouldn't load and we offered to take her off his hands. We called her Sixty-two fifty because that's what she cost us. We didn't bother to look at her paperwork for a couple of days and were totally amazed to find her Jockey Club papers and that she was an Alydeed daughter. She is turning out to be a wonderful horse.
At the last minute, we went to the Holiday Pony Sale last week; again, I still needed lead ropes. We got 2, attached to ponies that had 4 stickers each. They had been through Shipshewana, New Holland and Sugar Creek. We figured the poor things had enough. They cost us about $70. each.
This auction used to run about 50-75 horses through. Lately, they are running between 150-200 and there are a lot more dealers. Prices are terribly low. I don't know if this info is important but I thought someone should know that the dealers are 'shopping' in new places.
Clarissa
