Loup City Auction Report

26 June 2010

Loup City, Nebraska

This is the auction report for the Loup City Auction in Loup City, Nebraska from 26 June 2010.  The auction started at around 2pm in the afternoon and ended at approximately 6:30pm.  We arrived at around noon and went through the pens to look at the horses.  It was around 92 degrees with a heat index of around 106 degrees.  Our main goal at the auction was to find a pony with the potential to be a good kid’s horse for my friend’s daughter.  My friend was willing to buy one that needed training if it had the right temperament.    We spent a lot of time going through each pen and examining the horses.

There was only one pen that had water in it and that had a stallion, two mares and two young foals (approximately 1-2 months old) in it.  They were also knee deep in mud and the horses were congregating around the water because it had concrete under it.  The majority of the pens were concrete and therefore dry.  Unfortunately these pens had no water or hay unless their owners provided it for them.  I saw very few owners that stayed with their horses.

There were eight mini horses and 5 drafts.  The majority of the horses were quarter horses, paints, and light breed horses.   As you looked through the pens you could see the majority were young, healthy horses.

We observed one pen with pregnant mares in it.  They had no water, no hay, and no shade.  The one mare was actively contracting at the time (by the time she went through the ring, her rump was significantly softened, her tail was up, the contractions were stronger, and she was stopping with her legs spread slightly.  She looked like she could go deliver at any minute.).

There were pens with stallions and mares together.  It did seem as though most of the horses in the same pen were from the same farms and were okay being together.  There was one large Belgian mare in with another horse, that I am not sure were supposed to be together.  She was patient, but didn’t like him coming too near.

Finally we came across a pen that had three mini donkeys and a mini stallion and mini mare in it.  The mini stallion was a bit naughty and fighting with the large horse in the next pen and kicking at the donkeys if they got close to the mare.  My friend’s daughter took one look at the donkeys and fell head over heels in love.  She decided that she would much rather have a donkey than a pony.  The donkeys were very sweet and loved scratches.  We visited this pen many, many times.

The direct to slaughter pens at the rear of the auction property were muddy, but had water.  Only one pen had hay in it.  There were approximately 70 horses between the three pens.   We were able to go back to those pens and examine the horses there, but were unable to go into the pens.  All of the horses in that pen already had their stickers attached.  The majority of the horses were very nice looking horses.  They were all young looking and very fat.  I didn’t see a single one that I would have said was old, sick, or underweight.  There was one gelding that had a large wound on his rear leg (upper part).  It was an older wound from the looks of it as the skin that used to cover the wound was rolled up below it and had stuck that way (it had healed together and couldn’t be moved).  The wound had a layer of proud flesh over it, but it was very thin.  There was also a very handsome grey appy with a blanket in one pen.  His hind leg looked like it had been broken near the cannon at one point in time and healed crooked.  He was able to walk on it, but he was stepping on the side of his hoof to do so.  There were many young horses and a lot of them came up to the fence for scratches.  It was hard to walk away from them since we knew where they were going.  They were complete with direct to slaughter stickers.

There was a guy back there going through these pens of horses and he talked the guy into letting him look at a couple of them.  The one was a very tall (16.2-17.0 hand) STB looking horse.  He was allowed to bring him out in the alley way and try him out as a riding horse.  The horse turned on a dime and was very well broke.  He also looked at a second horse that he tried out in the alley way.  This horse also was very well broke and responsive.  I am not sure what happened with the second horse, but the first one later showed up in the auction ring.  When he came through the ring, he didn’t have a sticker on and sold for slightly over $300.  They also didn’t announce the buyer number for him.

The auction went fairly quickly over all.  At the start of the auction, things were a little slower as the owners told more about their horses and many were ridden through.  There wasn’t a loose pen so all the horses were sent through the main ring.  At the end the horses were run through very quickly with little to no information about them.    There was a nice range of well-bred, registered horses.  People were picking up very nice horses for cheap.  A couple hundred dollars was the average with some spectacular horses going for slightly more.

In the ring, the horses that were run through loose were chased around and barely given any chance to stop moving.  The one guy in the ring enjoyed using his paddle a bit too much in my opinion.  He also didn’t care where he hit: head, back, rump, or legs.  Many of the horses were just afraid to go through the exit door and would try to turn back.  If they did, the first place he would hit was the face.   I hate to admit it, but a few kicked out at him after he hit them and I kind of hoped they would connect.  I know my daughter felt the same way.  This was the first time she had ever been to an auction and she was very angry at the way he was handling the horses.  She yelled out at him to quit hitting the horses like that.  I know a few people heard her as they looked up at us and smiled at her.  I am very proud of her for being willing to speak up about it at the young age of almost eight.

At one point my husband called me and I had to step outside to talk with him.  While I was out there, there was a young lady who had purchased a horse for $25 (I believe she was the girlfriend of buyer number 116).  Looking through the list, I believe it was horse number 272.  He was run through loose with no halter and there was no mention of if he was broke to ride or not.  She was waiting to have the farrier (there was one on site) take a look at his feet when she decided to see if he could ride.  He was behaving nicely leading and apparently did really well haltering.  So right there in the parking lot, someone gave her a leg up on him.  She rode him bareback in just a halter and lead rope around the parking lot.  He never flinched and was very responsive and seemed well broke.  She said he was the best $25 horse she had ever bought.

We went back to the loading dock to pick up the donkeys and I noticed a double decker trailer.  I had my friend drive slowly past it so I could snap a few pictures and get the DOT number.  The driver eventually backed up to the ramp, so the horses could be loaded, but they didn’t load while we were still there.  We had our turn at the loading dock and the donkeys weren’t enthusiastic about loading.  We finally had to pick the smallest one up and place him in the trailer.  The second one just needed to have one front hoof lifted and then she went in.  Once the first two were in, the third loaded on her own.   We realized that the donkeys had not been stopped by an water on the way to loading, so we knew that they would be dehydrated from being in the heat all day.  We stopped back by the front office where there was a small café to see if they would have a bowl of some kind we could use to get them some water.  The young lady was very nice and let us borrow a bucket (it was one of the larger feed buckets) she had in there and was sweet enough to clean out thoroughly and fill for us.  The donkeys drank slightly more than half the bucket.  At first they were afraid of the bucket and I wondered if they had ever seen one before.

We had a two and a half hour drive home and we made quite a few pit stops to make sure they were doing okay.  They caught the attention of many people who came over to take a look.  The little jack donkey learned that if he put his head through the side door during a check that he could visit with anyone that came up.  People just loved to scratch his face and rub his ears.  At one point we stopped at a gas station and we had a bit of engine trouble (we think the thermostat went out).  A nice gentleman came over to assist us and I borrowed a bucket from the lady inside to let the donkeys have another drink.  Everyone was curious and eventually we had the guy helping us, three ladies, two motorcycle riders and their female companions surrounding the trailer giving the donkeys attention.  They asked a lot of questions about the auction and we explained about slaughter and where the majority of the horses were going.  We talked about neglect and abuse and made a few new friends along the way.

Eventually after limping slowly home to keep the engine from overheating, we arrived at my friend’s house.  The donkeys unloaded well and were able to be taken one at a time to their temporary pen using just a lead rope around their neck.

As I was typing this up, my phone rang and my friend was calling to let me know some news about the donkeys.  All three donkeys are halter broke.  The shyest one has really come around and is the favorite of her daughter.  My friend’s daughter is four years old and able to lead the little jenny everywhere with no problem (she has named her Princess Ruby.).  My friend also discovered that the other jenny is pregnant.  Somehow in all the excitement of loading them and visiting with them in the pens, we missed her very full udder.  My friend says she will be lucky if she doesn’t foal in the next month.  We knew she had a slightly larger belly than the others, but didn’t think she was that close to foaling.  The jack donkey will be going to a good friend of hers and will be in a great home.  The final jenny is safe, but still needs a home.  She could be pregnant as well since the other one is, but she isn’t showing an udder and may be early in the pregnancy.  I am trying to talk my hubby into it, but he said I have to make a choice between her and Rose.  Sigh.  I will keep everyone updated on the donkeys.

Mini donkeys.  We spent a huge amount of time with these little ones.  There were two jennies and a jack.  The largest jenny was a little darker and pretty shy.  She eventually let us rub on her, but we had to move slowly.  The second jenny was slightly smaller and lighter in color.  She was very friendly and in heat.   The jack was the smallest.  He was super friendly and became our trip mascot.  Yes…all three of these guys ended up in my friend’s trailer. lol She wanted 2 (one for her and one for a friend, but they talked her into taking all three…I am trying to convince my hubby to let me take the second jenny.)
