Madison, Nebraska Auction Report

1 April 2012, Madison County Fairgrounds, Madison, NE

Overall the Madison, Nebraska auction was pretty decent.  I did have a few concerns and will share those in the following write up.

The loose ring horse set up was different from what I am used to.  The loose ring horse ran through in a different section of the fairgrounds and they ran during the last part of the tack auction.  They were in the pens behind the roping chutes of the arena.  Stallions weren’t separated from mares and foals.  There was no shade in the pens and no hay or water.  This was a problem for me as the temperatures were high for this time of year and that day they hit around 80 degrees.  Overall the condition of the loose ring horses was pretty good, but there were a few exceptions.  Two were extremely underweight and one had a severe case of rain rot.  Of the loose horses, many weren’t halter trained or had much human interaction.  The horses that were run through the loose ring all appeared to be sound.  During the loose horse sale, there was a stallion placed in the chute toward the roping box as he was calling and acting aggressive.  Unfortunately the chute was along the path where the other horses had to use to get to the ring (a temporary ring set up in front of the roping boxes).  He was rearing up and causing a lot of issues.  He even got himself tangled up several times and could have been seriously injured because the chute he was in didn’t have solid sides and he got his legs between the bars a couple of times.  After he caused panic for several horses, they ran him through the ring and shifted him to a pen that was at the very back corner of the pens and left a pen empty between him and the other horses.  The auction workers were fairly kind to the horses as they ushered them through the line to the ring.  On a few they got a little rough even though in those cases the horses were reacting to the aggressive stud and were afraid to go past him.

Because of the way they had the loose horse pen arranged; it was difficult for people to bid unless they stood near the ring although the auction workers tried to get everyone to sit in the stands around the arena.  It was difficult to see the horses, although it was easy to hear the auctioneer.  If someone wanted to bid on a horse, they moved down next to the ring before the horse entered.  You could see the horses that were coming as they were in a line with gates between them.  The vast majority of these horses were purchased by suspected horse traders or kill buyers.

The ride in horses were in a different area of the fairgrounds.  They were located in the stalls attached to the indoor arena.  These horses had the option of hay and water if their owners chose to provide it.  I think most of the horses had at least water and quite a few had hay as well.  Many were tied in the stalls, but some were left loose.  Of the ride in horses only one was extremely emaciated and one was slightly thin.  The majority of the horses were either well broke or at least started and almost all of those were ridden in.

The ring was set up so that only a portion of the indoor arena was used for the sale and most owners used the remainder to warm up their horses or allow potential buyers to try out the horses.  It gave the buyers a chance to see how the horses were behaving when they weren’t in the ring.  The numbers on the horses were extremely difficult to see as they were painted on in orange paint.  On several of the horses it blended in to the point where even the auctioneer had to ask the number of the horse.  The horses didn’t come through the ring in the order they were numbered.  They came in as the owners brought them up and there were several pauses while they found horses to bring to the ring.  The first two auctioneers did a great job of announcing the age, gender, if the horses were registered, and any other pertinent information.  The final auctioneer seemed like he just wanted to finish the auction and barely said anything about the horses unless questions were asked.  At one point the speakers started fuzzing extremely bad and you couldn’t hear what was being said, but he just kept going.  Finally a different worker fixed the problem.  There was one extremely lame horse (he wasn’t rode in and was announced to have been abandoned) and two that showed some lameness (although they were rode in anyway).  There were two more that showed some slight lameness, but there owners guaranteed them sound and said the issues didn’t start until they arrived at the sale and that they believed it to be a stone bruise.

Sorrel stud.  Extremely agitated and going after other horses.  He was separated because he came in screaming and prancing.  He was put in the chute to the roping arena (where the calves and steers go through).  Was rearing up any time a mare approached.  Got his leg tangled in the cute rope, then alternately caught his front legs in the side panel (looked like open gate panels).  They had to send him through and then find him a new pen because the other horses were terrified to go past him.   Halter broke.  Looked Arabian or TB with extremely petite face.  The owners gave no info other than he was a stud.

Red Roan, Doc Jack/Peppy San Bred, but her papers were lost.  Worked in feedyard, ropes, 16 hands, limping a bit, but the owner said it was a stone bruise from riding around the fairgrounds.  Said she would be 100%sound.

Pictures:

Please note all pictures were taken with a cell phone.  Most auctions do not allow pictures to be taken, so these were taken while trying not to let anyone see me!  I have tried to identify the pictures and match them to the horses that were sold by numbers.  In some cases this is extremely easy, but in others there is no way to positively identify the horses.  The ones that are not identified will be posted last.

Unable to identify:
I am not able to match these pictures with the information I have on the list.  Some of the horses went out of order, so even going by the phones date and time stamp I can't figure it out!  Sorry...I hate to leave these horses unidentified!
