O'Neill Nebraska Auction Report

Hi everyone,

Here is the report from the O'Neill auction that I went to on Saturday.  I got there entirely too early to begin with.  I was told the horses were going to start at 11am and they didn't actually start until 3pm (nearly 3:30).  But that gave me plenty of time to walk through the pens and study the horses that were there.   I tried to take very detailed notes to put in with their sale info on the chart.

The day started out pretty cold.  Friday it rained all day and the outside pens were an absolute mess!  Mud 4 to 6 inches deep in some of the pens.  The isles were fairly clear, but some had water going across them.  I saw several horses slip on the concrete isles as they were chased into the pens.  The pens were each equipped with plenty of hay, although some owners had their horses tied so that they couldn't reach it (one lady brought super fancy hay bags to feed her horses out of!).   The water tanks were either partially filled with rain water or empty.  Some were knocked over and had no water at all.

The first thing that I noticed was the way the horses were unloaded.  They were chased off the trailers (unless their owners unloaded them because they were saddled or haltered) and crowded into a small pen together to have tags placed on them.  The tags seemed to have trouble sticking as most of the horses were still slightly wet from the night before.   Then the auction workers went on ahead and opened the gates that would lead to the pen that they were to be put in.  Once all the gates were arranged, one worker waled in front of the group waving a stick (possibly electric on the end) keeping them from getting too far ahead and to turn them into the right pen.  The guy following had a similar stick.  He seemed to have no problem hitting the horses as they were herded to the pens.  I saw him seriously wack one horse that he seemed to think was moving too slow.

For the most part the horses were in pretty good condition, but still shaggy.  I only saw 2 or 3 that had major cases of snots and unfortunately they were crowded into pens with horses that looked very healthy.  They were also in pens very near other large groups of horses.  There was only one group of four or five horses that were very skinny.  They plowed into the hay as soon as they were put in the pen.  They seemed like they hadn't been fed very well in a long time.  I would rate them at about a 2 on the scale.  There was one mare that was a bit thin, but overall looked pretty good.   The rest of the horses were in great condition with a couple being on the verge of very overweight.

This auction was the toughest one on me so far to go to.  My heart was pretty much ripped out by two horses that were nearly completely blind, a mare and young foal, and one that either had a broken rear fetlock or a genetic deformity.

The first blind horse was a very sweet sorrel gelding.  He was terrified because he was in a pen between two fairly aggressive horses.  He would try to move to one side of the pen or the other and would be attacked on each side.  I knew something was odd about him from the minute I saw him unload.  He kept trying to throw his head up into a funny position (a little sideways and up).   Once he was in the pen, I went up and checked him out closer.  His left eye was extremely swollen and was bulging out a bit.  You could clearly see the cataract in it.  The right side was completely clouded over and had absolutely no vision in it.  When I tested to see how much he could see, I was practically able to touch the eye without him blinking...it wasn't until my hand brushed his eyelashes that he blinked.  Then I checked the other eye.  I believe he could see some shadows in it, but he had to tip his head a certain way to even see that.  As terrified as he was, as soon as he smelled me (I could tell the minute he did because he almost immediately calmed down and stepped forward.) he came to the gate where I was standing, despite the threats from the horses next to him.   He lowered his head until he could touch the hand I was holding out.  He then stood very still and let me rub him.  He had halter marks on his nose and it looked as though the halter had started to grow into his face.  He let me checked out his eyes in a completely trusting manner.   When I walked away, he seemed so upset, that I kept finding excuses to stop by his pen and visit as I looked at the other horses.

The second blind one was in a pen with a couple of other yearlings.  That is probably why I didn't notice at first that she was blind.  She followed the others to the hay and settled in to eat.   When they led her through the ring, she was extremely docile and calm.  The led her in without a halter, but with a very lightweight rope around her neck.  She followed along as if she was a dog.  I could see her ears working overtime trying to figure out where she was and what was going on.  She started just once when the auctioneer banged the gavel the first time, but after that ignored the sound.   The worker that lead her in said that she had little to no sight in either eye. The owner had wrote on the paperwork that she "couldn't see too good!"  There were no bidders for these horses.  The one auction worker offered to take them if someone would pay him $20 to haul them away!

I wanted to take them but I have no quarantine, no pen that would be safe for them, and no transport to get them to my place.  It was horrible.   I was in absolute tears by the time they were led out of the ring.  All I wanted was to stand up and shout that I would take them.  I don't own a cell phone or I would have called my hubby to ask if we could set up something temporary for them.  So I did the only thing that I could, I spoke with the guy that offered to take them (their owners had apparently left already) I told him that I worked in rescue and that I could help him find a place to take them if he would just give me a call.  I also told him that if the owners returned for them that he could give my number to them as well, or to anyone else who would take them.  It was the one moment that I truly wished I had not been alone at the auction!  I was hoping that by the time I got home  (I live an hour away), someone would have called.  Still haven't heard anything.  I cried the whole trip home over these two horses.  In my heart I know that I should have said that I would take them and to heck with the consequences!

Then there was the mare with a very young foal.  He was maybe 2 weeks old at the most, although an older guy and I were looking at them and we agreed he was probably closer to a week old.  He was the youngest horse there by a lot.  He was in a pen with his mom, another mare with her yearling baby, a two year old filly, and the stud that was apparently the sire to all the younger horses in the pen.  They all looked very similar to him!  This poor baby was wading through the mud in the pen that was about 4 inches deep.   He was fighting to stay away from the older horses and keep his momma between him and them.  He did get a bit fed up with the way things were and once when he got too crowded he kicked out at the other horses!  I was absolutely shocked to see an individual tag on him.  They were planning on selling him separate!  When they came in the ring, you could hear the hush in the crowd.  All the women were talking about how adorable  he was.  The bidding   got to $250 and stalled out there.  I was terrified that the  buyer was going to take the mare only.  when the auctioneer asked him if he wanted the baby too, the guy actually took a few minutes to think it over!!!  I just wanted to throttle him!  He finally said, "Yeah go ahead and throw him in too"!  Such calous disreguard for the life of such a young baby was awful to witness.  It made me glad that there are rescues that are willing to take in little guys that don't get lucky enough to stay with their mommas.  I seriously would have bid on him if he had not gone with his mare.  He was small enough that I could have fit him in the back of my Explorer if worst came to worst!

Then there was this gorgeous, tall paint horse.  He was already in the pen when I arrived and started walking through.  He caught my eye and I couldn't wait to get to his row to check him out.  I was thinking that he was definitely going to find a good home.  Then I made it up to the pen.  His left rear leg was bent completely out at a weird ankle!  That is when I saw the reason.  He had apparently been born with a genetic defect, been stepped on as a foal, or had broken his fetlock.   It made almost a "L" shape from his leg and then down to his hoof.  He was walking on the side of his hoof, but I have no idea how he was even able to put weight on it!  He was very shy, but I could see that the three other hooves had been trimmed very recently.  The owner obviously had allowed the back hoof to grow out in an effort to give him more to balance on.   I can't imagine how in the world they got the other hind hoof trimmed!  Putting full weight on it had to be pure agony.  I am not sure what happened to this guy.  I didn't see him come through the sale ring at all and I never left.  I am guessing that the management decided not to send him through.  There was no sign of him when I went back into the pens after the auction was over.  To he completely honest, the only thing I could think was at least he wasn't going to die on the slaughter truck, trampled by the other horses, when his leg gave out.  I prayed that he either went home with his owner or that he was put down to end his misery.

At the end of the auction, i went out to the pen to say goodbye to those who had touched my heart that I couldn't help.  I stood for a half an hour with the blind gelding.  Now that the other horses were moved, he stood so quietly and he gently touched my hand with his nose.  I rubbed his neck and face and he made sure that I scratched just behind his ear.  I told him what a sweet boy that he was and that no matter what he would always have someone that was thinking of him and loving him.  The auction workers kept stopping to watch me as I stood with him.  The one guy even asked me if I was okay because you could tell that I was ready to break down.  I asked him if he knew what would happen to him and he directed me to the guy that had offered to take him.    He just couldn't understand why I was so upset.  He kept repeating that both of the blind horses were worthless and that no one could possibly want them.   I told him that I wanted them and if the situation were different, that they would have come with me.  He looked at me like I was crazy.  Even more so when I gave him my number and begged him to put whoever took those two in touch with me.  He walked off with his wife and I went back to the gelding for one last rub.  I left with my heart breaking and my stomach in knots.  I can only pray that wherever he is right now that he is safe.  Him and the little blind filly.  In some ways I am greatful that I wasn't able to pet and love on her.  I would not have made it home from the tears otherwise.

So.  here is the table I made of the horses.  At the bottom there are the stats on what horses went to the killbuyers broken down by age.  For the record, five mares reported to be pregnant went to the killbuyers.

Sorrel gelding halter broke.  Blind in one eye completely (cloudy) and sees only shadows (or so it seemed to me…may have been even less than that) with cataract in other eye.

No bids.

This horse will haunt me forever.  I spoke to the guy that offered to take him (he works at the sale barn) afterwards and he wanted the owner to give him $20 to haul him away.  I offered any help I could give, gave him my number, and told him that he could call me and I would find a rescue to take him!  Told him that even if he didn’t take him that he could give my number to whoever did (along with another blind horse…later on list!).

Older (15-20 yrs old) sorrel gelding.  Sway back, but very sweet! Yearling filly from blue roan stud.  Didn’t get to see her up close, but sale barn worker said that she is mostly blind in both eyes.  Very little vision.  Lead her through with just a rope around her neck.  Very sweet and trusting.

No bids. This one will also haunt me for eternity.  Offered phone number to whoever took her with offer of help placing her in the future.  We’ll see if they call.

Auction Pictures:

IM003954.JPG (139057 bytes)    This was the momma with the two week old baby.  They were horses # 318 and 319.  The colt standing next to them is horse # 320 and he was bought by a kill buyer.

IM003955.JPG (90465 bytes)   This was the blind filly (Blue Roan, Horse #352) with the other yearlings that she came to the auction with.  The filly on the far left was horse #351 and she was bought by a kill buyer.  The filly in the middle was horse # 347 and she was also bought by a kill buyer.

IM003956.JPG (69842 bytes)  This was the very friend'y grulla filly! (Horse #277)

IM003957.JPG (100557 bytes)   Pregnant black mare that was bought by kill buyer.  (Horse #272.)

IM003958.JPG (96992 bytes)   Group of yearlings that were in together (Horses #276, 274, and not sure what the third tag number was).  The paint was bought by a kill buyer (Horse # 274).

IM003959.JPG (85658 bytes)    Older extremely sway backed gelding that was bought by a kill buyer. (Horse # 327)

IM003960.JPG (118773 bytes)     This is the gelding with the large dent in the front of his chest that was bought by a kill buyer. (Horse # 326)

IM003961.JPG (103772 bytes)     12 yr old gray gelding.   Looked like he went to a family. (Horse # 342)

IM003962.JPG (115730 bytes)     This mare just wouldn't stand so I could see her pretty face.  She was in with the gelding above.   She was possibly pregnant and was bought by a kill buyer. (Horse # 341)

IM003963.JPG (122310 bytes)    This was the only group of skinny horses at the auction.  The bay yearling (horse # 343) and the2 yr old sorrel mare (# 275) was bought by a kill buyer. The gray looking mare was sold as a 5 yr old appy who used to be a parade horse.  Her number was missing and I unfortunately missed who she was sold to.  At $125 the chances are that she went to a kill buyer.  I didn't add her in the kill buyer totals above since I am not sure.  I am not sure what the number was on the second sorrel horse in this picture.
