Equine Related Bills in Congress

Here is a brief explanation of the bills involving horses in the Congress right now.
Congress is back in session, and so are two crucial equine protection bills!

H.R. 503/S. 311 (The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act) will prohibit the slaughter of American horses for human consumption. Americans don’t eat horses, but last year alone more than 100,000 U.S. horses were killed for their meat, which was exported to Europe and Asia.

H.R.503
Title: To amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.

H.R. 6598

H.R. 6598 - introduced to the House on July 24th by Representative John Conyers Jr., in an effort to make our way around the pro horse slaughter lobby blockade of the AHSPA, will permanently put an end to the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the transport of live American horses for slaughter across the US border.

So far this year, over 60,000 horses have been slaughtered in Canadian and Mexican horse slaughter plants under appalling conditions, where they are subjected to blatant abuse and unspeakable suffering. As the end of the 110th Congressional session looms near, Members of Congress must act NOW to stop this ongoing tragedy.

For more information about horse slaughter and H.R. 6598, please go to http://www.awionline.org/legislation/horse_slaughter/index.htm.

Why should we stop horse slaughter and transport across the boarders of our horses?

Because things like this can happen!!

These horses were rescued from kill buyers, either by rescues or private, concerned citizens like you!

These are pictures of horses from a feedlot in Filley, Nebraska.  We were given less than 24 hours to rescue as many horses as we could from the feedlot.  We (several rescues in the state of Nebraska) started with the pregnant mares and in the end were able to save 46 horses.  Unfortunately there were around 200 that were unable to be rescued.  They were shipped to Mexico where they were forced to bear the most horrible death at the slaughter house there!

Did you know that some of the horses that are slaughtered were stolen from a loving home?  A home that wants them back!  Many horse thieves take the horses they steal to slaughter houses to make a quick buck and to get rid of the evidence!  Lets take away an outlet for horse thieves, support the ban on horse slaughter.
Please take a moment to go to the Stolen Horse International/Netposse website and see if you recognize any of the horses that are missing.  You might help save that one from slaughter.
